Team Canada skated to a 5-2 win over Slovenia, and as I suggested yesterday, Montembeault wasn’t in net for this game, Devon Levi was with Joel Hoffer acting as a back-up. For the second game in a row, Justin Barron didn’t see much action, in fact he saw even less spending just over 9 minutes on the ice, making him the least used player by head coach André Tourigny. The Canadians will be back in action tomorrow as they’ll be taking on Slovakia at 9:20 AM ET.

Meanwhile, the USA coasted to an easy 7-1 triumph over Hungary in which Luke Tuch got his first goal of the tournament while blue line prospect Lane Hutson got a single assist but finished his day with a +4 rating in 17 minutes and 36 seconds of action. As for Sean Farrell he spent 10 and a half minutes on the ice and managed to take a couple of shots on net. The Americans will be taking on Germany tomorrow morning at 9:20 AM ET.

Watching Hutson play, it’s easy to understand why Habs’ fans are excited at the thought of having him anchor the Canadiens’ blue line. He’s got some very smooth skating skills and maintains his balance very well. His ability to read the game is impressive and if he can make it in the big league despite his size, he could be a mainstay on the Habs’ blue line for a long time. Joel Armia and Finland will be taking on Sweden tomorrow afternoon while Dichow and Denmark will be facing Austria on Tuesday.

On this side of the pond, there isn’t much happening with the Habs and some people are starting to get anxious for Cole Caufield to be signed to a new deal. I’ll admit that I’d like that to be done as soon as possible, but as long as the matter is resolved before Caufield can entertain offer sheets, all’s well. Losing Jesperi Kotkaniemi to an overpriced offer sheet wasn’t the end of the world, but losing Caufield would be an unmitigated disaster. The Canadiens have been starving for goals for years and they’ve finally got a proper sniper in their mist, they need to keep him. It’s not surprising that Caufield, who’s also aware of that reality, wants to get paid though, I just hope Kent Hughes manages to sign him to a deal that won’t throw his salary structure out of whack… time will tell.
