Great weekend for the Penguins

The weekend couldn’t have gone much better for the Pittsburgh Penguins. They earned a dramatic victory over the Washington Capitals on a wonderful late third period Evgeni Malkin goal. It was a much needed two points. The good news didn’t end there. The Florida Panthers lost their third consecutive game in regulation. The Islanders also lost on both Friday and Saturday, earning only one standings point. This catapulted the Penguins playoff chances.

After plummeting to the 40’s the Penguins are back up to 82.6% as a result of their direct competition fumbling around. The Panthers are down in the 30’s. They have had a brutal stretch of games. The Penguins have Detroit and Nashville earlier in the week before they host the Boston Bruins on Saturday and Flyers on Sunday. Three of those four teams are in the bottom ten in xGF% this season. The Penguins need to take advantage of their games against the non-playoff teams. The Bruins have a legit shot at breaking the single season records for victories and standings points. You don’t want to be relying on those points. They shouldn’t have to. Seven of the next nine games are against non-playoff teams. If the Penguins miss the playoffs it will have been totally their fault. I don’t think they are going to miss. They have their issues, but they also have enough juice in the top six to get the job done.

The Penguins got a lot of help this weekend in addition to helping themselves against Washington. They are in the driver’s seat again.
