Game Summary:

It was about as tight a game as you can get. Tight checking, no room, blocks galore, and in the end the kind of loss you don’t necessarily feel as bad about. Goalies can be the worst and best thing about any given game. Tonight, there was some spectacular net minding.

So, yeah, it’s not fun to lose. But, the team was engaged for most of the game. It was down to the goalies and Hart won it tonight. The Flyers have the signature of a Tortorella team. Know your assignment and stay on it. The problem is that he ends up moving on after a few seasons. It’s not a “fun” brand of hockey. But, it’s custom made for a team that’s struggling.

Raymond really tried to get things together at the end, and I had a flash back of 2009 as Lidstrom was stopped by Marc Andre. Completely different, just feel similar. I really like what Raymond brings to any given game.

This kind of engagement and effort could see Detroit find some more success down the line. It feels like players are skating in mud out there, but it’s got that battle feeling some of us old timers tend to enjoy (I’m closer to 50 than I wish I was…)

In about 7 weeks we’ll know who is going to try and play for a contender and may hear talk of contract negotiations going one way or the other. Ek put out a piece about agents calling bloggers and giving false info to try and use “the press” as a tool to pressure GMs. I hate to say this, I’m not 100% sure “the press” exists in that fashion any more. There really aren’t many places to go without some sort of leaning or spin one way or the other.

It’s the downhill start and things will pick up all the way to March 3rd. I sincerely doubt that I’ll watch “trade central” as closely as in the past. It is a long day where the talking heads try to make everything as interesting as possible.

With a few days off and a sour taste after this one, Detroit surely has something to play for. Pride is no small thing to an athlete at this level. They want to finish and play to the end, more than we’ve seen in past years. That’s a nice change.
