The Anaheim Ducks came up short against the Winnipeg Jets yesterday, falling 3-2.

The Ducks managed to strike first, with Troy Terry’s shot getting redirected in front to get past Connor Hellebuyck midway through the first period. We saw some pretty good chances exchanged and near misses on both sides through the period, but the Ducks remained ahead through 20 minutes.

After John Gibson made some big saves in the second period though, Winnipeg did manage to tie it, with Kyle Connor burying a rebound on a power play. The Ducks gave up 15 shots in the frame overall but only surrendered the goal to Connor, heading into the third period tied.

While we didn’t see many chances exchanged throughout the third period, we certainly saw an eventful finish to the game. The Jets took the lead with under six minutes to go, with Sam Gagner finding Connor in front for his second goal of the game. However, Trevor Zegras pulled the game even once again under 30 seconds later, taking a pass from Adam Henrique to get into a good spot on rush, before roofing a shot over Hellebuyck.

As it looked like the game could be headed for overtime though, Kyle Connor was the hero for Winnipeg, taking a pass from Mark Scheifele after the Ducks couldn’t clear the zone and beating Gibson with under a minute to go. The Jets held on for a 3-2 win from there.

It wasn’t a bad effort from the Ducks, playing a pretty competitive game. That said, even though the shots were almost identical, John Gibson faced a lot of really good chances and had to be sharp or the game may not have been quite as close.

While Gibson hasn’t had a great start to the year, he’s been playing better as of late. The Ducks give up not only so many shots but also quality chances and I don’t think anyone envies Anaheim’s goaltenders.

For as many negatives as there are with the Ducks season, a positive to loop back to is the team’s young talent. Terry and Zegras both scored in the loss and rank first and second respectively on the Ducks in both goals and points. Mason McTavish has been adjusting really well to the NHL as well and while the team may still be a little ways off, they’re building towards being a competitive team.

Anaheim’s next game comes tomorrow against the St. Louis Blues.
