The success continues against Canadian-based NHL teams for the New Jersey Devils.

Last night, New Jersey continued their winning ways and beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-1 at the Bell Centre. Jack Hughes scored two goals and had one assist. Jesper Bratt and Dougie Hamilton both had a goal and an assist while John Marino had the empty netter. Vitek Vanecek made 25 saves in the win.

Woo’s Thoughts and Musing

1. Vanecek’s superb first period, which the Devils were outshot by the Habs 15 to 11, was a difference maker and set the tone of the game. It gave the Devils a chance to regroup during intermission. New Jersey went on to outshoot Montreal 28 to 11 for the rest of the game. The Devils have goaltending now and it has been paying off dividends this season. In the past, Devils would have to play catch up after having a bad first period. No more mountains to climb and Vanecek has been stellar by posting a 7-0-0, 1.40 GAA, .946 save percentage in the past 8 games since October 25th according to Mike Morreale of NHL.com.

2. Jack Hughes is heating up and is shooting the puck more. This is when Hughes is at his best when he has a shoot first mentality. And when he shoots from either circle, the puck seems to be in the back of the net often.

3. Jesper Bratt has continued scoring and has 21 points in 16 games, while being plus 10. Bratt continues to impress and has been fueling the Bratt Pack fanbase.

4. John Marino for Ty Smith trade by Tom Fitzgerald: This could end up being better than the Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson fleecing by former Devils GM Ray Shero.
