There was not much to report at Habs’ practice this morning, no change to the lines and pairings, but there was some news at the coach’s post practice media availability. Martin St-Louis confirmed the Juraj Slafkovsky would be spending his first year in the NHL with a billet family, just to make sure that the 18-year-old is well looked after and that he has a normal life so to speak. Meanwhile, Arber Xhekaj and Jordan Harris will be roommates in an apartment downtown, that doesn’t mean they’ll spend the year in the NHL though with Laval being so conveniently close to Montreal.
Today, the spotlight shouldn’t be on hockey though, it should be on the annual Montreal Canadiens’ blood drive. Since 1981, the team has been holding this event to encourage people to give blood and according to Hema-Québec’s stats, the even has helped save 110 470 lives. If you can give blood, head down to the Bell Center today and do a good deed.
On top of helping refuel Hema-Québec’s blood bank, you’ll meet players and members of the Canadiens’ organization, get a bag of goodies from the club (car flag, lanyard, stress relief ball and a puck) and a 2-hotdog meal on the house. It had been a few years since the team was able to hold the event because of the pandemic and I must admit, it felt good to have it back. I started donating blood back in 2018 when I attended this event for the first time and I’ve given 12 times so far, only takes a little bit of your time and you never know whose life you might end up saving.
Throughout the day, Habs players are meeting and greeting donors, posing for pictures, and signing autographs. If you can, go down, you won’t regret it! I met the nicest old lady today, a die-hard Caufield fan who wanted to give blood but was adamant that she’d stick around until she got “her Cole” (as she said) to sign her jersey, thankfully, she didn’t have to wait too long for the young sniper to turn up and grant her wish.
