Kent Hughes really must believe that the early bird catches the worm, once more, there were some news in Habs land bright and early today when the team announced that it had signed Owen Beck to a three-year entry-level contract. The contract runs from season 2022-2023 to 2024-2025 and will see him earn a $95,000 signing bonus per year, $775,000, $835,000 and $855,000 in the NHL each year. If he plays in the AHL, he will earn $82,500.
Now, since Beck is under 20-years-old and is from the CHL, he cannot play in the AHL just yet as per the NHL/CHL agreement and so if he doesn’t make the team this season and is sent back to junior, the contract will slide to next year. The following tweet by Andrew Zadarnowski explains the monetary advantage the team gets by signing him to an early contract:
Obviously, the camp standout looked absolutely over the moon about signing his first contract, but it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anybody, given his impeccable performance every step of the way since the rookie camp. Speaking to the media this morning, Beck couldn’t say what was next for him, whether he’d be heading back to his junior team or not, but what he did say is that he would be focusing solely on hockey this season. I’ll admit I was surprised to hear this since Beck was named the OHL’s Scholastic player of the year last season. For now, he’s treating every day at camp like it’s his last one and making the most of it.
Tonight, the Canadiens will be taking on the Senators at the Bell Center and someone will be moving up the pecking order. After playing on a line with Dach and Hoffman yesterday, 1st overall pick Juraj Slafkovsky was slotted alongside newly minted captain Nick Suzuki, who’ll make his preseason debut tonight and Cole Caufield. After his strong performance last night, the big kid has earned himself a shot on the big stage, it will be interesting to watch what he can do with the Canadiens’ cream of the crop. It wasn’t so long ago that he was telling the press jokingly prior to being drafted that Suzuki and Caufield could use a left winger and that he’d be the perfect fit, we’ll see tonight if he can put his money where his mouth is as they say.
Up front tonight, it might be a last chance to impress for Harvey-Pinard, Heineman, Beck, Gignac and Ylonen while Guhle, Xhekaj, Schueneman and Harris will carry on their blue line battle on defense. I fully expect to hear a big wave of cuts tonight although there has just been a 7-player one:
At practice this morning, Marty St-Louis went back to his bantam coach roots and painted boxes on the ice to explain penalty killing positioning to his troops. Penalties have been one of the Habs’ downfall this preseason and the coach felt he needed to make things extra clear. St-Louis really is an hands on coach as showed by the footage captured by TVA Sports’ Marc-André Perreault this morning:
Tonight’s game is set for 19:00 and will be broadcasted on RDS and TSN 2 and TSN 5. I’ll be back later tonight with my Hainsight on the game!

Le contrat couvre les saisons 2022-2023 à 2024-2025 et il recevra un bonus de signature de 95 000$ par an en plus de lui rapporter 775 000$, 835 000$ et 855 000$ par an dans la LNH. S’il joue dans la Ligue Américaine, il recevra 82 500$.
Cependant, comme Beck a moins de 20 ans et qu’il vient de la Ligue Canadienne de hockey, il ne peut pas présentement jouer dans la AHL en raison de l’entente entre la LNH et la CHL. C’est donc dire que s’il ne fait pas l’équipe, le contrat glissera à l’an prochain. Évidemment, la révélation du camp d’entraînement, était très heureux d’avoir signé son premier contrat, mais cela n’aurait pas dû surprendre qui que ce soit, puisque ses performances ont été impeccables depuis le tournoi des recrues. Parlant aux médias ce matin, Beck ne pouvait pas dire quelle serait la prochaine étape pour lui à savoir s’il retournerait sous peu dans le junior, mais il a confirmé qu’il entend se concentrer strictement sur le hockey cette saison. Cette information m’a prise de court je l’avoue puisqu’il avait été nommé le meilleur joueur étudiant dans la OHL la saison dernière. Pour l'instant, il traite chaque journée du camp comme si c’était sa dernière et il tente d’en profiter à fond.
Ce soir, les Canadiens affronteront les Sénateurs au Centre Bell et quelqu’un gravira un échelon de plus. Après avoir évoluer sur un trio avec Kirby Dach et Mike Hofman hier, le 1er choix au total Juraj Slafkovsky se trouvait sur la ligne du nouveau capitaine Nick Suzuki, qui jouera son premier match présaison ce soir, et Cole Caufield. Après sa solide performance contre les Leafs, le jeune s’est mérité une chance de jouer avec les “grands”, ce sera intéressant de voir ce qu’il arrive à faire avec les 2 meilleurs joueurs du CH. Il n’y a pas longtemps qu’il disait de manière désinvolte aux médias avant d’être repêché que Suzuki et Caufield avait besoin d’un ailier gauche et que cela serait un bon créneau pour lui. On verra ce soir s’il peut relever le défi.
À l’avant ce soir, ce pourrait être une dernière chance d’impressionner pour Harvey-Pinard, Heineman, Beck, Gignac et Ylonen pendant que Guhle, Xhekaj, Schueneman et Harris poursuivront leur combat à finir à la ligne bleue. À l’entraînement de ce matin, Martin St-Louis est retourné à ses racines de coach Bantam en poignant des boîtes de positionnement défensif sur la patinoire afin de bien faire comprendre le jeu en désavantage numérique à ses troupes. Le jeu à court d’un homme a été l’un des talons d’Achille du CH depuis le début des matchs présaison et l’entraîneur ressentait le besoin de mettre les choses au clair. St-Louis est vraiment un coach impliqué, tel qu’on peut le voir dans les images captées par Marc-André Perreault de TVA Sports:
