The World Junior Championships kicked off yesterday and the action started with Jan Mysak’s Czechia taking on Slovakia. While the Czech dominated most of the action, it was still a tight affair, and the game-winning goal was scored with only a couple of minutes to go in regulation. In the end, the Czech went away with a 5-4 win.
It was a great game for Mysak who took 12 of the 52 shots that got to the Slovakian net and gathered a goal and an assist. He broke to the defense to find himself in all alone with the goaltender before taking a brisk wrist shot that fooled him. As for the assist, he carried the puck all to way to the net and his teammate just had to take the rebound. It’s worth noting that the Slovaks are without Juraj Slafkovsky and Filip Mesar since the Canadiens have told them both to concentrate on the upcoming training camp.
Meanwhile, two more Habs’ prospects, Oliver Kapanen and Petteri Nurmi, took part in Finland’s dominant 6-1 win over Latvia, but they were held off the scoresheet. On tap today, a match-up between Switzerland and Sweden, Canada’s first game against Latvia and Germany taking on Austria in the last game of the evening.
Keep an eye on Joshua Roy in Canada’s game as the Canadiens’ prospect will be riding shotgun on the top line alongside Mason MacTavish and Connor Bedard. As for Riley Kidney he was used on the extras’ line at practice, we’ll see if he gets a chance during the tournament.
Le Championnat Mondial junior s’est mis en branle hier avec la Tchéquie de Jan Mysak s’en prenant à la Slovaquie en lever de rideau. Bien que les tchèques aient dominés l’action, se fut quand même un match serré et le but gagnant a été marqué avec moins de 2 minutes à faire. Au final, les tchèques l’ont emporté 5-4.
Ce fut un très bon match pour Mysak qui a pris 12 des 52 tirs que son équipe a placé sur le filet Slovaque amassant au passage un but et une passe. Il a marqué en perçant la défense pour se retrouver seul devant le gardien qu’il a battu d’un tir vif du poignet. Quant à la mention d’aide, il a transporté la rondelle jusqu’au filet adverse et son coéquipier n’a eu qu’à prendre le retour. Rappelons que les Slovaques ne peuvent pas compter sur Juraj Slafkovsky et Filip Mesar, les Canadiens leur ayant dit de se concentrer sur le camp d’entrainement à venir.
Pendant ce temps, deux autres espoirs du CH, Oliver Kapanen et Petteri Nurmi, prenaient part dans la victoire dominante de la Finlande sur la Lettonie par la marque de 6-1. Ni l’un ni l’autre n’a réussi à s’inscrire au pointage. Au menu aujourd’hui, une rencontre entre la Suisse et la Suède, le premier match du Canada face à la Lettonie et pour terminer la journée, un match entre l’Allemagne et l’Autriche.
Gardez un œil sur Joshua Roy dans le match du Canada alors qu’il évoluera en compagnie de Mason MacTavish et Connor Bedard sur le premier trio. Quant à Riley Kidney, il était sur la ligne des extras lors de l’entraînement, alors il faudra voir s’il aura sa chance pendant le tournoi.
