The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that they’ve traded defenseman Tony DeAngelo and a seventh-round pick in this year’s draft to the Philadelphia Flyers. In exchange, the Hurricanes received a 2024 second-round pick, a 2023 third-round pick and a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft, which was used to select defenseman Simon Forsmark.

DeAngelo is 26 years old and was a restricted free agent. A highly talented offensive defenseman, DeAngelo posted 10 goals and 51 points in just 64 games and had become a key part of Carolina’s defense group.

I’ll do a more in-depth breakdown of the trade soon but just for some quick notes: moving DeAngelo is a big loss for the Hurricanes and after seeing his two-year extension with the Flyers at a $5 million cap hit, extending him seemed like the easy decision. General manager Don Waddell usually has a backup plan but he could struggle to replace DeAngelo.
