The New York Islanders traded the 13th overall pick in the NHL Draft to the Montreal Canadiens today, in exchange for defenseman Alexander Romanov and the 98th overall pick.

Romanov is just 22 years old was originally taken 38th overall by the Canadiens in 2018. He’s played 133 career NHL games and this past season, he averaged over 20 minutes per game, scoring 13 points in 79 games. Romanov is currently a restricted free agent.

I’ll speak more about this trade in the coming days but for some quick thoughts: I think Romanov will be a great addition, even if the Islanders gave up their key asset to make it happen. New York is getting a player who’s still very young but can make an impact right away and will immediately fill a need.
