In no surprise and what was viewed as a fair accompli, Igor Shesterkin won the Vezina Trophy. The only mild surprise was that he didn’t sweep all the first place votes. Shesterkin placed third in the Hart voting and Adam Fox finished fifth in the Norris balloting. Chris Drury was announced as a finalist for the Jim Gregory, GM of the Year Award.

Shesterkin:
Igor garnered 29 of the 32 first place votes to win the Vezina. Frederik Andersen, Andrei Vasilevskiy and Ilya Sorokin each had one first place vote with the speculation that each of their respective GMs voted for them. Ironically, the players that finished second and third, Jacob Markstrom and Jusse Saros did not receive a first place vote.

Shesterkin finished third in the Hart Voting. I would love to ask the 51 voters (he was named on 144 if I believe the 195 ballots) who left him off the ballot what the heck they were thinking. Pretty sure most of us thought Austin Mathews would win, but I expected the gap between second and third to be a lot closer and thought Igor had a chance to finish second. Of course that presumption was based on all the voters having a clue. Clearly, I was mistaken.

Fox finished fifth in the Norris Trophy voting. Cale Makar took first place by 25 points over Roman Josi. We knew the vote would be close and no issues with Makar winning. Fox had a very solid year and deserved to be in the top-five after winning the award last season. He is the first Ranger since Brian Leetch in 1994-95 and 95-96 to place in the top-five of Norris voting in back-to-back seasons.

NHL All-Star Team: Shesterkin, aided by his Vezina win, is the goalie on the first team. No other Ranger placed on the first of second team. Mika Zibanejad did not finish amongst the top-10 at center while Chris Kreider placed fifth and Artemi Panarin seventh at left wing. Fox just missed the second team, finishing fifth in the defensemen voting.

Drury is one of the three GM of the Year Finalists along with Julien Brisebois of Tampa and Joe Sakic of Colorado. My guess is that Sakic wins the award. Since the voting took place at the end of of the second round of the playoffs, Drury being one of the three shouldn’t be all that shocking.
