After losing game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final in dramatic fashion Saturday in Springfield, the Rocket got right back on the horse and won game 2 4-2 handing the Thunderbirds their first postseason loss. Tonight, Jean-François Houle’s men will be back in front of their fans in Laval and will hope to go on a winning streak. In the AHL the 7 games series are structured with 2 games in the town of the team that’s got home ice advantage, then 3 games in the other town and finally 2 games back in the first city. In other words, the Rocket now has 3 home games to play in 4 days.
There were some health concerns following the last few games, both Cedric Paquette and Gabriel Bourque were injured. Laval announced this morning that Paquette will be in the line-up and that Bourque would be a game-time decision. He felt fine this morning, and should he continue to do so, he will be playing, if not, Habs’ prospect Joshua Roy could make his professional debut.
After getting a goal and an assist in Sunday’s win, Jesse Ylonen will want to keep making a case for himself as an offensive threat in the hope to catch the eye of the Canadiens’ front office. After all, if things go according to plan this summer and Montreal can shed some salary, there may be some room on the wings with the Canadiens and it’s definitely not lost on Ylonen.
As for Cayden Primeau, he had another strong performance on Sunday, stopping 33 of the 35 shots received for a 0.942 save percentage. The youngster keeps impressing in these playoffs and there’s no doubt that this is a relief after such a rocky year in which he had unconvincing spells in the big league. The puck drops at 19:00 in Laval tonight and the game will be broadcasted on RDS, since there’s no NHL action on the schedule, now is as good a time as any to check out the Habs’ farm team.
Meanwhile in the CHL, Canadiens’ first round pick in 2020 Kaiden Guhle is having excellent playoffs with the Edmonton Oil Kings gathering 7 goals and 8 assists in just 16 games. The 20-year-old is currently making a strong case for himself and may just force the Canadiens to keep him in the NHL next season if his strong play can translate to the next level. Admittedly, there’s no point in rushing Guhle’s development in the midst of a rebuild, but there is no doubt he will get a good hard look in the preseason and probably at the start of the regular season as well.

Ce soir, les hommes de Jean-François Houle seront de retour devant leurs fans à Laval et espéreront entreprendre une série de victoire. Dans la LAH, les séries de 7 matchs sont structurées différemment avec 2 matchs au domicile de l’équipe qui a l’avantage de la glace, suivi de 3 matchs dans l’autre ville et finalement, les 2 derniers matchs si nécessaire dans la première ville. En d’autres mots, le Rocket a maintenant 3 matchs à domicile à jouer en 4 jours.
Quelques doutes planaient au niveau de la santé du Rocket après les deux premiers matchs alors que Cedric Paquette et Gabriel Bourque étaient tous deux blessés, mais Laval a annoncé ce matin que Paquette serait en uniforme alors qu’une décision serait prise dans le cas de Bourque juste avant le match. Il se sentait bien ce matin et si c’est toujours le cas ce soir, il sera de la partie, sinon, l’espoir du CH Joshua Roy fera ses débuts professionnels.
Après avoir récolté un but et deux passes dans la victoire de dimanche, Jesse Ylonen voudra continuer de plaider sa cause en tant que menace offensive dans l’espoir d’attirer l’attention de l’état-major du Tricolore. Après tout, si tout se passe comme prévu cet été et que le CH réussit à se débarrasser de quelques gros contrats, il pourrait bien y avoir des postes disponibles à l’aile avec les Habs et Ylonen en est surement très conscient.
Quant à Cayden Primeau, il a offert une autre solide performance dimanche en arrêtant 33 des 35 tirs qu’il a affronté pour un pourcentage d’arrêt de .942. Le jeune homme continue d’impressionner pendant ces séries et il ne fait aucun doute qu’il s’agit là d’un soulagement pour l’organisations après une année en dents de scie ponctué de passage non convainquant dans le circuit Bettman. La mise au jeu initiale est prévue pour 19:00 ce soir à Laval et la rencontre sera diffusée sur les ondes de RDS, puisque la LNH fait relâche ce soir, il s’agit d’une bonne opportunité de voir le club école des Habs à l’œuvre.
Pendant ce temps dans la LCH, le premier choix des Canadiens en 2020, Kaiden Guhle connaît d’excellentes séries avec les Oil Kings d’Edmonton amassant 7 buts et 8 passes en seulement 16 matchs. Le joueur de 20 ans est en train de se bâtir un excellent dossier et pourrait forcer la main des dirigeants du Tricolore pour le garder dans la LNH la saison prochaine s’il peut maintenir ce niveau de jeu dans la LNH. Bien sûr, il n’y a pas de raison d’accélérer le développement de Guhle en pleine reconstruction, mais il ne fait pas de doute qu’il sera longuement observé lors du calendrier préparatoire et probablement en début de saison également.
