The Place Bell was rocking in Laval on Saturday night as over 10,000 fans were gathered to see the Canadiens’ farm team take on the Sabres’ the Rochester Americans. In a 6-1 offensive feast, the headliner was Danick Martel, a product of the QJMHL who went undrafted before finding a spot in the Flyers organization, then the Lightning and finally landing in Laval at age 27. His 4 goals set the tone as Laval dominated the game from one end to the other and never had to look in its rearview mirror. The ship has probably already sailed when it comes to an NHL career for Martel, but what he’s doing now, leading the way and showing the Habs youngsters how to win in the playoffs will be more than useful to the Habs in the long run. For now, younger players like Rafael Harvey-Pinard, Jesse Ylonen, Joel Teasdale and Mattias Norlinder are taking kind of a back seat, but they’re still gaining some valuable experience.

As for Cayden Primeau, he is taking center stage and making it clear that the number 1 job is his. In 5 games he’s got a 4-1 record, a 0.945 save percentage and a 1.77 goal against average. Those are some solid numbers and it’s reassuring to see him manage them at that level. While the young net minder has been with the Rocket for 4 seasons, he’s only got 87 games of AHL experience under his belt. Game 2 will take place tonight in Laval and there’s no doubt the Rocket faithful will be hoping for more of the same.

Meanwhile in the OHL, one of the Canadiens’ prospects is having himself a great post season. Arber Xhekaj was never drafted but he earned an entry-level contract after making the most of his training camp invite last season. The hulking young blueliner is 6’4”, weights in a 225 pounds and is right-handed, which is one weakness area for the Canadiens. In 9 playoffs games with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Xhekaj has gathered 8 points and racked up 24 minutes of penalty and a +13 rating. He’ll definitely be one to watch come training camp.
