The Canadiens announced this morning that they have hired Christopher Boucher as their new director of hockey analytics, this is a new role which stems from Hughes’ promise to modernize the organization when he was first hired.
For the last 2 seasons, Boucher worked as a pro scout for the San Jose Sharks, and he had previously worked for the analytics company Sportlogic. He comes to the organization with a wealth of knowledge acquired in over 20 years of dealing with analytics and having been a consultant for NHL teams for over 10 years. The GM said that the Canadiens are aware of how important analytics are in today’s game and Boucher will be tasked with assisting both management and the coaching staff by providing them with the statistical data needed to evaluate players and make strategic decisions.
It was high time the Canadiens moved forward on that path if they do not want the game to pass them by, after all, it’s been a while since they fired their analytics consultant Matt Pfeffer in July 2016. According to Sportsnet’s Eric Engels back then, he was showed the door after making a passionate plea for the Canadiens to keep P.K. Subban rather than trade him to Nashville in return for Shea Weber who was far from being an analytics’ darling.
Hopefully, the next hire announced by the Canadiens will be a permanent contract for interim head coach Martin St-Louis. At the end of the season, both sides were clear that there was mutual interest in reaching a deal, but nothing has been announced of yet, 2 weeks after the Habs played their last game.

Pour les 2 dernières saisons, Boucher a travaillé en tant que dépisteur professionnel pour les Sharks de San Jose et il avait préalablement travaillé pour la compagnie d’analyse de statistiques avancées Sportlogic. Il rejoint le club avec un bagage de connaissances acquises en travaillant dans le milieu pour les 20 dernières années et ayant été consultant pour des équipes de la LNH pendant 10 ans. Le DG a mentionné que l’organisation était au fait de l’importance des statistiques avancées dans le hockey d’aujourd’hui et que Boucher sera notamment chargé de fournir les statistiques nécessaires aux membres de l’état-major et du personnel d’entraineurs pour leur permettre de mieux évaluer les joueurs et prendre des décisions stratégiques.
Il était grand temps que les Canadiens suivent la parade dans ce domaine, après tout, ça faisait déjà un bail qu’ils avaient congédier leur consultant dans le domaine Matt Pfeffer en juillet 2016. Selon le journaliste de Sportsnet Eric Engels à l’époque ce serait son plaidoyer passionné pour garder P.K. Subban plutôt que de l’échanger à Nashville en retour de Shea Weber, un joueur que les statistiques avancées ne favorisaient pas, qui lui aurait coûté son emploi.
Espéront que la prochaine annonce d’embauche du CH sera celle d’un contrat permanent pour l’entraîneur par intérim Martin St-Louis. À la fin de la saison, les 2 parties ont clairement exprimé un désir mutuel d’en venir à une entente, mais rien n’a été annoncé pour l’instant, 2 semaines après le dernier match de la saison.
