Previous post: Even in OT loss, top line continues to shine

Summary: Detroit was embarrassed against Nashville. Duchene, whose tenure after leaving CBJ seemed to see his scoring touch disappear is in fine form. Filip Forsberg is rolling quite nicely as well. The team sits comfortably in the top 4 of its division with Dallas, Winnipeg, Chicago and Arizona all struggling. Things could turn, but this is a team I would have counted outside of the playoff picture in the preseason.

January has been brutal for Detroit who’ve won only 2 of 10 games (both from Buffalo). There’s usually another turn around all star weekend as teams face down the final 20. Detroit continues to show improvements in many games, this just wasn’t one of them. Detroit will have 3 days off before facing Chicago.

The team is also getting interestingly near to the trade deadline. Seeing Kyle Turris go unclaimed through the waiver process seems to indicate that teams that want to add will have to send $ out of town to stay cap compliant. It’s also clear that Duchene and Turris are heading in vastly different directions after the deal that saw the two pass one another on paper, though not necessarily in person.

I’m fascinated to see if Yzerman will collect draft picks or make a big pitch for Chycrun (I would overpay for that defensemen, I’ve made that clear many times. It’s not just the player, but at his age he and Seider could develop well together).

Hopefully next week will see some Ws to close out the month.

First Period - No Red Wings goals

Second Period Red Wings goals - Adam Erne hasn’t bounced back and had the follow to his record setting scoring of last season. I’d been criticized for calling him Abdelkader 2.0. Last year’s 11 goals are more than 1/3 of his career total spanning parts of 6 seasons and 255 games. He’s a “worker bee”. Causes havoc in the corners and brings strong physicality. Tonight, he found a little of last season’s touch as Bertuzzi dished a beautiful 100 ft or so pass as Erne sprung from the penalty box and scored on a 1 on 0 opportunity. Bert continues to shine as that was his 17th assists and 36th point in 33 games played.

Third Period - no Red Wings goals
