It was a busy day in Habs land today, the Canadiens announced that they had finally got their man for the GM role in Kent Hughes and that they had inked him to a 5-year deal. Before the news was even official some people had started to complain that the Canadiens would now be led by 3 anglophones, nevermind the fact that Hughes is from Beaconsfield and is perfectly bilingual. Tomorrow at 4:00 PM he will be speaking to the media for the first time and then, the real work will begin. Watch this space tomorrow night for my breakdown of that introductory presser.
Then, the Canadiens announced that both Joel Armia and Cole Caufield were on the Covid protocol, meaning that neither would be available for tonight’s game. That made way for Tyler Toffoli to return and Michael Pezzetta to get back in the line-up. The Canadiens struggled out of the gate but eventually managed to hit their stride by killing a couple of power plays in the first on the back of some solid play by Samuel Montembeault who kept the puck out and allowed the Habs to come out of the first unharmed. Then, in the second, Christian Dvorak scored a power play goal before Pezzetta doubled the Canadiens’ lead when he took the puck on the chin before it went in (I dare say he took his scratching from yesterday on the chin). It was the first time since November 20th that the Canadiens had a 2-goal lead. 10 minutes later, the Stars got back in the game with a couple of lucky bounces and the fragile Canadiens looked like they might cave, but again, Montembeault saved them from the abyss, stopping a breakaway on the goal line. And a miracle happened, a video replay went Montreal’s way!
Montreal started the 3rd on the penalty kill, but somehow, Nick Suzuki and Tyler Toffoli found themselves on a shorthanded breakaway and capitalized through number 73. Moments later, the Habs had a 3 on 0 and Dvorak scored his second of the night to make it 4-1 for a few seconds… Before Tyler Seguin scored one for the locals to get them back within 2. In a crazy third though, Josh Anderson made it 5-2 with the assent of Toronto war room no less, twice in one night. There was some rough stuff in the period and don't be surprised if Jonathan Drouin misses the next game at least, his cross-check to the neck of Seguin was ill-advised and dangerous... Believe it or not, the Canadiens hung in there and signed their 8th win of the season by a score of 5-3 and while the score line could make you think it was a dominating performance, the Habs scored 5 goals on just 18 shots before Oettinger got the hook…Take a bow Montembault, this one was thanks to you.
Ce fut une journée chargée dans le monde du CH, l’équipe a d’abord annoncé qu’ils avaient finalement mis la main sur leur nouveau directeur-gérant en la personne de Kent Hughes et qu’ils l’avaient signé à un contrat de 5 ans. Avant même que la nouvelle ne soit officielle, certains avaient déjà commencé à se plaindre que 3 anglophones étaient maintenant à la tête de la Sainte-Flanelle, peu importe le fait que Hughes soit natif de Beaconsfield et qu’il soit parfaitement bilingue. Demain, à 4 :00 PM, le nouveau DG rencontrera les médias pour la première fois et ensuite, le vrai travail commencera. Garder un œil sur Hockeybuzz pour mon résumé de la conférence de presse demain soir.
Puis, les Canadiens ont annoncé que Joel Armia et Cole Caufield se retrouvaient à leur tour sur le protocole de Covid de la ligue et ne seraient donc pas du match. Leur absence a fait de la place pour le retour au jeu de Tyler Toffoli et le retour dans l’alignement de Michael Pezzetta. Comme c’est trop souvent le cas, le CH a connu des difficultés en début de match mais il a finalement pu trouver son rythme en neutralisant le jeu de puissance des Stars 2 fois coup sur coup, en grande partie grâce au brio de Montembeault, qui a réussi à leur faire traverser le premier 20 sans dommage. Montréal a ensuite commencé la 2e période avec un but en avantage numérique de Dvorak avant que Pezzetta ne double leur avance quelques secondes plus tard. C’était la première fois depuis le 20 novembre que le CH possédait une avance de 2 buts. 10 minutes plus tard, les Stars sont revenus dans le match sur un but chanceux, ébranlant la confiance fragile du Tricolore qui a quand même tenu le coup jusqu’à la fin de l’engagement encore une fois grâce à leur gardien. Celui-ci a même réussi à faire l’arrêt in extremis sur une échappée, un arrêt qui, oh miracle, a reçu la bénédiction du war room à Toronto.
Montréal a commencé la 3e période en infériorité numérique mais, on ne sait trop comment, Suzuki et Toffoli se sont retrouvé en surnombre devant le gardien des Stars et le numéro 73 a capitalisé. Quelques instants plus tard, les Habs se sont retrouvés à 3 contre 0 devant Oettinger et Dvorak a marqué son 2e de la soirée pour porter la marque à 4-1 pour quelques secondes… avant que Tyler Seguin ne marque pour rétrécir l’écart à 4-2. Dans une 3e période folle, Josh Anderson then made it 5-2 avec la bénédiction du département des reprises de la ligue, pour la deuxième fois de la soirée. Il y a eu du grabuge pendant la 3e par contre et ne soyez pas surpris si Drouin manque à l'appel lors du prochain match, son double-échec au coup de Seguin était stupide et dangereux... Croyez-le ou non, le CH a tenu bon pour signer sa 8e victoire de la saison par la marque de 5-3 et même si le pointage peut porter à croire que ce fut une performance dominante, ce n’est pas le cas, les Canadiens ayant marqué 5 buts en 18 tirs seulement avant qu’Oettinger ne soit retiré...Applaudissements pour Montembeault, cette victoire lui revient!
