This morning at practice, we finally saw lines that looked like NHL caliber lines and both Tyler Toffoli and Josh Anderson practiced in non-contact jerseys. Hopefully, this means we’ll see improved performance by the Canadiens in the coming weeks, although I’ll admit I’m wondering if they’ll work as hard as the AHL roster that played its hard out against the Panthers on new year’s day. Before Covid hit, some of the veterans appeared to be going through the motions and Jeff Petry even went as far as criticizing the system, we’ll soon see if everyone is now back on board. According to different sources, Chris Wideman will represent the Habs at the All-Star game, that kind of says a lot about the kind of season the Canadiens are having.

The Canadiens will fly out today for a 7-game road trip and they will leave without Carey Price, Brendan Gallagher, Paul Byron and the players that are still on the Covid list. Ducharme said that of the 3 guys mentioned, Paul Byron is the closest to a return to play. It’s possible that both Byron and Gallagher could rejoin the team during this long road trip, which is highly unlikely for Carey Price.
Jeff Petry spoke to the media post-practice and was asked if the current restrictions in Canada could potentially make American born players ask to play in the US or demand a trade. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t really give a straight answer to that, but did confirm that his family stay home in Michigan rather than travel back with him to Montreal. That information had already been confirmed by his wife on Instagram who stated that they decided to stay behind because the boys could have a more normal life there. It feels like Petry’s time in Montreal could soon be coming to an end and that’s a shame, his value has rarely been as low as it is right now and the return will be far from what he could have fetch last season when he was mentioned in the Norris conversation early on.
Ducharme mentioned that all the players who practiced in regular jerseys today would be available to play tomorrow against the Bruins but that a final decision on the line-up would be made tomorrow since other players who are still in the US will also rejoin the team in Boston, like Jake Evans and Alexander Romanov.
Finally, Renaud Lavoie states that the Canadiens are now down to 3 or 4 candidates for the general manager’s role and that he expects the process to be ramping up this week. Considering that Jeff Gorton had said he wanted to have someone in place by mid-January, that would make sense. Meanwhile, Pierre Lebrun reports pretty much the opposite...Make of that what you will...
Ce matin à l’entraînement, nous avons finalement vu des trios dignes de la LNH et Tyler Toffoli et Josh Anderson ont également pratiqué, sans contact toutefois. Espérons que cela signifie que nous verrons de meilleures performances de la part des Canadiens dans les semaines à venir, quoique je me demande si cet alignement travaillera aussi fort que celui de la ligue américaine qui a dû affronter les Panthers le 1er janvier. Avant que la Covid ne vienne ravager l’alignement, certains vétérans donnaient l’impression qu’ils ne faisaient qu’acte de présence et Jeff Petry avait même critiqué le système de jeu, nous verrons bientôt si tout le monde est de retour sur la même longueur d’ondes. Selon différentes sources, Chris Wideman sera le représentant du CH lors du match des étoiles, ça donne une bonne idée du genre de saison que connait le Tricolore.

Les Canadiens s’envoleront pour un voyage de 7 parties aujourd’hui et ils quitteront sans Carey Price, Brendan Gallagher, Paul Byron et les joueurs qui sont toujours sur le protocole de la Covid. Des 3 joueurs mentionnés, Ducharme a affirmé que c’est Byron qui était le plus près d’un retour. C’est possible que Byron et Gallagher rejoignent l’équipe pendant le voyage mais ce serait vraiment surprenant que ce soit le cas pour Carey Price.
Jeff Petry a parlé avec les médias après la pratique et il s’est fait demander si les restrictions en place actuellement au Canada pourraient faire en sorte que les joueurs américains demandent de jouer aux États-Unis ou demandent un échange. Sans surprise, il n’a pas directement répondu à la question, mais il a confirmé que sa famille était restée au Michigan, puisqu’ils ont décidé que leurs garçons pourraient avoir une vie plus normale ainsi. C’est du moins la raison que sa femme a mentionné sur son compte Instagram. Ça donne vraiment l’impression que le séjour de Petry à Montréal tire à sa fin et c’est dommage, sa valeur a rarement été aussi basse qu’elle l’est aujourd’hui et le retour sera de beaucoup inférieur à ce qui aurait pu être obtenu la saison dernière alors qu’il était mentionné comme un candidat potentiel au trophée Noris en début d’année.
Ducharme a mentionné que les joueurs ayant pratiqué avec des chandails réguliers aujourd’hui étaient tous disponibles pour le match de demain face aux Bruins mais qu’une décision finale sur l’alignement serait prise demain puisque d’autres joueurs qui sont toujours aux États-Unis viendront rejoindre l’équipe à Boston comme Jake Evans et Alexander Romanov.
Finalement, Renaud Lavoie rapporte que le CH n’aurait plus que 3-4 candidats dans la course pour le rôle de DG et qu’il s’attend à ce que le processus s’accélère cette semaine, ce qui semble logique puisque Gorton avait dit vouloir avoir quelqu’un en poste pour la mi-janvier. Pendant ce temps, Pierre Lebrun rapporte exactement le contraire...Je vous laisse libre de choisir qui vous croyez...
