While we all thought that this pandemic was as good as over not so long ago, the Omicron variant is now wreaking havoc pretty much everywhere including in the NHL. The Flames, the Avalanche and the Panthers are all on a forced holiday until December 27. As for the Bruins, their Covid protocol list is fast growing and they’ve now got 7 players on there, tomorrow’s postponement was the right thing to do.
As Jonathan Drouin said last night, it’s not exactly reassuring for a team to play against an opponent that’s dealing with a Covid outbreak. Not that the situation is any better off the ice, today Quebec reported 3,768 new cases and while Omicron is not as deadly as other variant of the virus (apparently) it spreads faster and can still send people to the hospital. It’s not so much a question of the virus killing people, it’s the virus killing the health system by overwhelming it and impacting other life and death treatments.
At one stage, the NHL will have to seriously consider taking a break to stop the spreading of the infection, after all, what’s hockey games compared to the health and safety of people? Meanwhile, the NHLPA needs to start thinking about if it’s worth the gamble to go to the Olympics. The dire the situation gets, the less likely it is that they’ll be able to go.
Since there’s no game tomorrow, I’m going to go ahead and give myself a day off to start my Christmas holiday and spend a cozy Saturday night with my significant other without watching, talking or thinking about hockey, that’s a very rare occurrence. Whatever you are doing, I hope you stay safe and find a way to enjoy the Holiday season even with the current situation.
