At this stage, no one is expecting this Montreal Canadiens team to win really, and lately, they weren’t even putting up a fight. There was a better effort tonight though, it definitely looked like the Habs at least wanted to win even though they couldn’t manage it. This 5-2 defeat is the Habs’ 24th in 30 games this season, but still, we must find some positives to talk about.
Jeff Petry was back in the line-up after spending some time on the injury list, unfortunately, if his injury was healed his play wasn’t and he looked like a shadow of himself as he has since the start of the season. In his post-game comments, he was clear: “There’s nothing new to say, we’re not playing as a group, as a team, we’re just not, there’s no structure”. Sounds like someone is not a fan of coach Ducharme’s system…I know, that wasn’t entirely positive, so here’s a true positive: Jesse Ylonen scored his first career goal thanks to a Jonathan Drouin assist. Speaking of Drouin, he scored the Canadiens’ first goal and finished his evening with 3 shots and a +1 rating.
Other positive, Dominique Ducharme finally got the memo about giving Cole Caufield more ice-time, the youngster played just over 16 minutes tonight, getting 3 shots and had some good looks on the power play. The Penguins were quite disciplined tonight and were only sent to the sin bin twice, but it still allowed us to get a look at the newly minted 1st power play unit featuring Caufield and Hoffman on the wings, Drouin and Suzuki at the back and the front of the net and Chiarot on the blue line. They couldn’t score but there were some good passes and the 4 forwards looked genuinely excited to be playing together as a unit. Hopefully, they all stay healthy, and they have time to develop some chemistry.
The Habs will now head home for a duel with the Flyers on Thursday night before taking on the Bruins Saturday.
Au point ou nous en sommes, personne ne s’attend à voir les Canadiens de Montréal gagner et dernièrement, ils ne semblaient même pas essayer de gagner. Ce soir par contre, ils y ont mis plus d’effort, ils semblaient vraiment vouloir gagner même s’ils en ont été incapables. Cette défaite de 5-2 est la 24e des Habs en 30 matchs cette saison, mais je vais tout de même tenter de trouver du positif à dire.
Jeff Petry était de retour dans l’alignement ce soir après un séjour sur la liste des blessés et si sa blessure était guérie, son jeu lui ne l’était pas. Encore une fois, il n’était pas l’ombre de lui-même tout comme depuis le début de la saison. Dans ses commentaires d’après match, il a été clair : “Il n’y a rien de nouveau à dire, on ne joue pas comme un groupe, comme une équipe, on ne le fait juste pas, il n’y a pas de structure.” Semblerait qu’il ne soit pas un fan du système de Ducharme…. Je sais, ce n’était pas vraiment un point positif, alors en voici un : Jesse Ylonen a marqué son premier but en carrière dans la LNH sur une belle passe de Jonathan Drouin. Parlant de Drouin, il a également marqué le premier but de son équipe et il a terminé son match avec 3 tirs et un différentiel de +1.
Autre point positif: Dominique Ducharme a finalement reçu le memo à propos du temps de glace de Cole Caufield, le jeune homme a joué tout juste au dessus de 16 minutes, tirant 3 fois sur le filet de Tristan Jarry et il a eu quelques belles chances sur l’avantage numérique. Les Penguins ont été très disciplines ce soir, n’étant puni que 2 fois mais cela nous a quand même donné l’occasion de voir la nouvelle première unité du jeu de puissance montréalais avec Caufield et Hoffman sur les ailes, Drouin derrière le filet, Suzuki devant et Chiarot à la ligne bleue. Ils n’ont pas réussi à marquer mais ils ont tout de même fait de beaux jeux de passes et les 4 avants avaient vraiment l’air content de se retrouver ensemble sur cette unité. Maintenant reste à espérer qu’ils pourront tous rester en santé pour avoir le temps de developer une certaine chimie.
Le CH prendra maintenant le chemin du retour pour en débattre avec les Flyers jeudi avant d’affronter les Bruins samedi.
