Considering this season is pretty much a write-off and the upcoming draft is in Montreal this July, I think it’s fair to expect that the Canadiens will be seller come trade deadline day, or even before. To be honest, there’s no point in holding on to assets until the deadline, their value isn’t going to get better playing on this team and lining up losses in any case.
Who’s likely to go? Well, right now, there are 2 prime candidates sure to receive some interest. Jake Allen is having a solid season even though he’s playing behind what can only be described as a sub-par defense. I wanted the Canadiens to keep Allen this Summer, he was signed to a reasonable contract (1 more year at $2.85 M) and felt like the perfect back-up to Carey Price, but 5 months on, there is no Carey Price, and the Canadiens are nowhere near contending, they don’t need a reliable back-up anymore as strange as it may be to say.
On the blue line, Ben Chiarot is on the last year of his 3-year deal worth $3.5 M per season and he’s having a very respectable season. Currently sitting 3rd in the team’s ranking when it comes to goal scoring (which is a bonus), he’s stepped-up big time in Shea Weber’s absence and he can provide a reliable presence on the defense corps of a contender. Chiarot is probably the Canadiens’ best chance of landing yet another 1st round pick.
To be fair, aside from Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Alexander Romanov, I wouldn’t bet on anyone being untouchable. Sure, there are big names that could garner interest such as Carey Price for instance, but his hefty contract ($10.5 M for 4 more seasons) may make it almost impossible to move. Although, if the Canadiens opt for a full rebuild and are years away from contending, eating some of that contract might not be the end of the world.
I’ve also heard Brendan Gallagher’s name thrown around out there and I can understand why teams would be interested in what he has to offer. Gallagher is a gritty committed winger who may not be having a great season, but who is on the Habs right now? And who would be after losing both of his linemates for the last 3 years? At $6.5 M for another 5 years, he’s not exactly a cheap option, but he’s a good one if he can find his game again and I do believe he can.
Would it be the right decision to move him? It wouldn’t be my first option to be honest. Kids need to be surrounded by veterans to learn to play the game the right way, but Gallagher made it clear when he signed a new contract: winning is important to him. Should he want out, then yes, I would trade him even though it almost hurts to write it.
As things stand, the Canadiens have got 11 picks in the 7 rounds of the 2022 draft, something tells me that number will grow in the upcoming months…Who would you keep? Who would you trade?
Considérant le fait que la saison est à toutes fins pratiques perdue et que le prochain repêchage est à Montréal en juillet, je crois qu’on peut s’attendre à ce que les Canadiens soient des vendeurs à la date limite des transactions, ou même avant. Pour être honnête, il ne sert à rien de garder des joueurs jusque-là, leur valeur ne risque pas de monter en jouant pour une équipe qui collection les défaites.
Qui partira? Eh bien pour l’instant, il y a au moins 2 bons candidats qui susciteraient surement de l’intérêt. Jake Allen connaît une saison solide et ce même en jouant derrière une défensive qui est définitivement sous la moyenne. Je voulais que le CH garde Jake Allen l’été dernier, il était signé à un contrat très raisonnable (1 an de plus à 2.85$ M) et il semblait être le second parfait pour Carey Price, mais 5 mois plus tard, il n’y a pas de Carey Price et les Canadiens sont à des années lumières de pouvoir compétitionner, ils n’ont pas besoin du second parfait, aussi étrange que cela puisse paraître à dire.
À la ligne bleue, Ben Chiarot écoule présentement la dernière année de son pacte de 3 ans qui lui rapporte 3.5$ M par an et il connaît une saison très respectable. Il est présentement 3e dans la liste des buteurs de l’équipe (ce qui est un bonus), il a vraiment pris les bouchées double en l’absence de Shea Weber et il pourrait amener une présence rassurante à la ligne bleue d’un aspirant sérieux à la Coupe Stanley. Chiarot est probablement la meilleure chance du CH d’aller chercher un autre choix de première ronde.
Pour être bien honnête, je crois qu’outre Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield et Alexander Romanov, je ne parierais pas sur qui que ce soit en tant qu’intouchable. Bien sûr, il y a de gros noms qui pourraient susciter beaucoup d’intérêt, comme Carey Price par exemple. Mais considérant son contrat (10.5$ M pour un autre 4 ans), il pourrait être presque impossible à échanger. Quoique, si le CH opte pour une reconstruction complète et se trouve à des années de compétitionner, couvrir une partie de son contrat ne serait peut-être pas la fin du monde.
J’ai également entendu le nom de Brendan Gallagher circuler et je peux comprendre pourquoi plusieurs équipes pourraient être intéressées par ce qu’il a à offrir. Gallagher est un joueur intense et bien qu’il ne soit pas en train de connaître une bonne saison, peut-on vraiment le blâmer? Qui en connaît une avec le CH présentement? Et qui en connaîtrait une après avoir perdu ses 2 compagnons de trio des 3 dernières années? À 6.5$ M par an pour un autre 5 ans, il n’est pas exactement une aubaine, mais c’est tout de même une bonne option s’il peut retrouver sa touche et je crois qu’il le peut. Est-ce que ce serait la bonne décision de l’échanger? Ce ne serait pas ma première option, après tout, les jeunes ont besoin de bons vétérans pour apprendre à jouer de la bonne façon, mais Gallagher a été clair lorsqu’il a signé son nouveau contrat : il veut gagner. S’il veut quitter, alors oui, je l’échangerais, même si je trouve ça douloureux à écrire.
Pour l’instant, les Canadiens ont 11 choix dans les 7 rondes du repêchage de 2022, mais quelque chose me dit que ce nombre augmentera dans les mois à venir… Qui garderiez-vous? Qui échangeriez-vous?
