Previous post: Wings win 4th straight via shootout

Game Summary:
5 straight. That is one heck of a win streak. The team is rolling and opening eyes. Tonight, it was a good time for depth players to carry the load on the scoreboard.

The rookies love overtime. It seems like both Raymond and Seider love to be on the ice 3 on 3. For Mo, 2/3 of his NHL goals are OT winners. (Of course, he has 3 goals). I love when players are comfortable shooting a moving puck. Ovechkin (who just scored his 750th and has 17 straight 20 goal+ seasons) made a decent career out of it. Shanny used to for Detroit back in the day. It’s such a fantastic look and Seider nailed it tonight.

Special teams are an issue. 0 for 3 on the power play and only killing 1 of 3 on the PK. Those deficiencies made the game unnecessarily close. At full strength, the Wings are scoring well. Something just isn’t clicking on special teams. All three Islander goals were special teams related (short hand and 2 with the advantage). A modicum of improvement could well have seen the game be settled in regulation.

This tilt was interesting for a number of reasons. There was a healthy level of “nasty” on the ice from the beginning. Hard hits being thrown. It felt like a rivalry game. Seeing the depth scoring carry the team to overtime was a nice change of pace. Smith is one of those players that, when he’s engaged he can make a difference. When he’s not, he can either be invisible or on a penalty parade. It’s good to see him find a game like this.

Final thought, are Seider and Raymond still “prospects”. I feel like they’re players at this point. When I hear them listed as top prospects I scratch my head a bit. Of course time will tell, but they certainly seem to have found their game much more quickly than we’re used to in the modern era. Night after night they show up and play and it’s been fun to watch.

First period Red Wings’ goals:
Wings gave up a SHG on their first power play just a couple of minutes into the game. At around the 5:18, Rasmussen won an offensive zone faceoff, Erne tapped it back to Hronek who skated a few feet to his right and ripped a hard snap shot. Game tied 1-1.

Hronek’s goal:

Leddy got hit hard ea Just over 2 minutes later, Sam Gagner banked a shot off of the Isles netminder, right at the side of the goal. good work behind the net as Rowney took the puck off of an Isles player, found Smith along the boards who got it to Gagner. 2-1

Gagner’s bank shot:

Second period Red Wings’ goals:

The Isles tied up the score on a power play. At 13:39, Givani Smith blocked a pass in the Wings’ zone, skated all the way down ice and sniped a beautiful shot far side. Unassisted goal off of a good defensive play for his 2nd of the season. 2 point night thus far.

Smith’s tally:

Third period Red Wings’ goals:

None

Overtime:
Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond both seem to love “extra innings”. Mo’s first goal in the NHL was and OT winner. Now, so is his third. Wings outshot Isles 5-1 in overtime, and shot #5 was a beauty. Zadina dished back to Suter who got the puck to Seider. Seider had a beautiful wind up into a moving puck. A beautiful tally to wrap up the game.

Seider’s OT winner:
