It could all be happening in the coming hours Habs fans. Earlier today, it was announced that the Canadiens had received permission to talk to Jeff Gordon, former Rangers’ GM. Apparently, he wouldn’t be hired as the GM though and speculation is that he could be considered for the President of hockey operations role. During the game, it was also announced that Scott Mellanby had resigned from his post as assistant general manager. On Hockey Night in Canada, Friedman speculated that Bergevin had probably tried to convince ownership to give Mellanby a bigger role once he leaves and that it didn’t work prompting Mellanby to quit. It’s only speculation for now, but I think we can expect things to unravel sooner rather than later.
On RDS François Gagnon reported that the Canadiens had confirmed that their next general manager will be French speaking. That of course means that Jeff Gordon couldn’t be the GM, but should a rookie French-speaking GM be appointed, they could use Jeff Gordon’s input and experience if he was hired as president of hockey operations… This is interesting to say the least. If we want to speculate, could it mean that Mathieu Darche would be given a chance as GM? Or perhaps Patrick Roy who’s never been a GM in the NHL?
Meanwhile, there was a hockey game tonight and I’m happy to report that the Canadiens did play, they didn’t just go through the motions, they showed real fight and effort. Oh, it wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t overly pretty either, but thanks to a stellar performance from Jake Allen who stopped 47 of the 50 shots he faced, they were finally able to put some points in the bank. Allen didn’t do it all by himself though, yesterday after the defeat in Buffalo, Josh Anderson looked properly fed up and said that the vets had to step up and tonight, he was one of the ones who did step up. The line he forms with Dvorak and Toffoli took 13 shots tonight and they all put up some points, Anderson got 2 goals and an assist, Dvorak a goal and a couple of helpers just like Tyler Toffoli (both Anderson and Toffoli got empty netters). This line has been pretty impressive since they’ve been reunited and hopefully they’ll keep going strong. Even if the Canadiens cannot hope to make the playoffs, good performance by veteran players could make them very appealing for other teams and allow the Canadiens to boost the return they could get for them.
The main difference tonight though was the fact that the Canadiens were able to keep their head in the game and push back every time Pittsburgh scored. All too often this year, when the opponent scores a goal, it has the effect of a fatal blow to the Habs but not tonight. Tonight, every single time the Penguins scored, the Habs replied in kind within less than a minute and that’s the sign of a team that believes. Still on the positive side of things, Arturri Lehkonen got himself a spot on the first line alongside Caufield and Suzuki and scored the goal that made it 3-1 Montreal. We also saw some impressive poised from Mattias Norlinder tonight who saved a goal when the puck was trickling towards the back of the net, and he intervened to push it back under his goalie. In that kind of situation, it would have been easy for a young defender to panic, but he didn’t, nerves of steel and damage averted.
The Habs will now be flying back to Montreal and take on the Canucks at the Bell Centre on Monday. Will Marc Bergevin still be the Habs’ GM when they do? Who knows…it sure feels like something could happen any time now…?

Plus tôt aujourd’hui, une annonce a été faite à l’effet que le CH avait obtenu la permission de discuter avec Jeff Gordon, l’ancien directeur-gérant des Rangers. Selon les informations qui ont été révélés, il ne serait pas pressenti pour remplacer Marc Bergevin, mais pourrait être considéré pour le rôle de président des opérations hockey. Pendant le match, le CH a fait une autre annonce, cette fois-ci de la démission de Scott Mellanby qui occupait le rôle d’assistant directeur-gérant depuis des années à Montréal. Sur les ondes d’Hockey Night in Canada, Friedman a mentionné que selon toute vraisemblance, Marc Bergevin a dû chaudement recommander Mellanby pout un rôle plus important après son départ, mais que cela n’a pas fonctionné, menant à la démission de Mellanby. Ce ne sont là que des suppositions pour l’instant, mais je crois qu’on peut s’attendre à voir du mouvement plus tôt que tard.
Sur les ondes de RDS, François Gagnon a rapporté que le CH lui avait confirmé que le prochain directeur-gérant du CH parlerait français. Ça signifie bien sûr que Jeff Gorfon ne pourrait pas occuper ce rôle, mais si un DG francophone recrue devait obtenir le rôle, il n’y a pas de doutes qu’il pourrait bénéficier de l’expérience et des conseils de Gordon. Si on veut spéculer, est-ce que ça pourrait vouloir dire que Mathieu Darche aura une chance en tant que DG ? Ou peut-être Patrick Roy qui n’a jamais été DG dans le circuit Bettman?
Pendant ce temps, il y avait quand même un match de hockey ce soir et je suis heureuse de pouvoir confirmer que les Canadiens ont vraiment joué, ils n’ont pas seulement fait semblant, ils ont fait preuve d’obstination et d’effort. Oh, ce n’était pas parfait, ce n’était pas exceptionnellement beau non plus, mais, grâce à une superbe performance de Jake Allen qui a stoppé 47 des 50 lancers reçus, ils ont finalement réussi à mettre 2 points en banque. Allen n’a pas tout fait tout seul toutefois, hier, après la défaite cinglante contre Buffalo, Josh Anderson avait l’air d’en avoir son voyage et a dit que les vétérans devaient montrer le chemin et il fut l’an de ceux qui l’ont fait ce soir. La ligne qu’il forme avec Dvorak et Toffoli a pris 13 lancers ce soir et ils ont tous récolté des points, Anderson avec 2 buts une pass, Dvorak avec un but et 2 passes, tout comme Tyler Toffoli (Anderson et Toffoli ont tous deux marqué dans un filet désert). Depuis qu’ils ont été réunis, ils ont fait du travail impressionnant et qu’ils continueront leur bon travail. Même si le CH ne peut aspirer aux séries, de bonnes performances des vétérans pour les rendre plus attrayants aux autres équipes, ce qui aiderait le CH à maximiser le retour qu’il pourrait obtenir pour lui.
La plus grande différence ce soir toutefois a été le fait que le CH a réussi à rester dans le match et à riposter quand Pittsburgh a marqué. Trop souvent cette saison, le moindre but de l’adversaire avait des airs de coup de grâce pour le CH, mais pas ce soir. Ce soir, à chaque fois que les Penuins ont marqué, les Habs ont répondu de la bouche de leur canon en moins d’une minute, voilà un signe d’une équipe qui croit en ses moyens. Toujours du côté positif des choses, Arturri Lehkonen s’est mérité une place sur la première ligne avec Caufield et Suzuki et a marqué le but qui a fait 3-1 Montréal. On a également vu un calme impressionnant de la part du jeune Mattias Norlinder qui, alors que la rondelle se dirigeait lentement vers le fond du filet d’Allen, il est intervenu pour repousser la rondelle sous son gardien. Dans ce genre de situation, ça aurait été facile pour le jeune arrière de paniquer, mais il ne l’a pas fait, calme olympien et dommage évité.
Les Canadiens retourneront maintenant à Montréal et ils affronteront les Canucks lundi soir au Centre Bell. Est-ce que Marc Bergevin sera toujours le DG du CH à ce moment-là? L’avenir nous le dira… on dirait vraiment que quelque chose pourrait se passer dans les prochaines heures…
