My Takeaways:

Samsonov On Fire – Ilya Samsonov posted his second consecutive shutout for the Capitals. Mike Vogel tweeted that this was the first time a Capitals goalie posted back to back shutouts since Braden Holtby did in January of 2017. In addition, it was the first time for back to back road shut outs since Clint Malarchuk accomplished it back in February of 1988. That is pretty wild! For a largely injury depleted Capitals team, the stellar goaltending from Samsonov has been massive. If you look at the onslaught of scoring chances Samsonov faced last night, it is quite impressive he didn’t allow a goal. Sure, the Sharks beat Samsonov and hit their fair share of posts, but sometimes you just get a little lucky! The Capitals have some huge games coming up against some high-powered offenses…we will need our goaltending to continue to be on its “A” game.

Penalty Kill Rolling– The Capitals penalty kill has been on fire as of late. They rank 10th in the league on the season and rank 4th in the month of November with a 92% kill rate on 14 penalties. The Capitals have killed off 13 straight penalties since 11/08. Last night, the Sharks had long 4-on-3 and a little bit of 5-on-3 and could not convert.

Conor Sheary Lights the Lamp (Twice) – Sheary had another great game for the Capitals. He scored the opening goal and tallied another one in the third period. Sheary now has four goals in his last five games. Sheary has seen an increase in ice time as of late with his elevated play on the ice. With lots of top players out of the lineup for the Capitals, they really need guys like Sheary to step up.

Alex Ovechkin Multi-Goal Game – Ovechkin did it again. The Great 8’s first goal was from his patented spot in his office on the power play. His second goal was an empty netter from the defensive zone on the ice. Ovechkin now has 14G-15A-29P in 18 games. It is objectively one of the greatest starts to a season ever for a player who is 36 or older. According to NHL.com, the only other player with a better start at this age was Mario Lemieux who posted 36 points in 18 games at the age of 37. Ovechkin now sits at 744 career NHL goals and is 22 goals behind Jaromir Jagr for 3rd all-time.

Next Up the Capitals finish off their west coast road trip with their first ever visit to Seattle. Puck drops at 9pm ET.
