Game 16: Larkin Threads the Needle Twice and the Wings Take the Win |

Montreal started this game pretty well and it was Ryan Poehling who score the first goal of the night allowing the Habs to take a 1-0 lead, but as per usual, the CH did its best to try and beat itself. For some inexplicable reason, after being dispossessed of the puck in the offensive zone, Jeff Petry tried to fix his own mistake and thought it would be a good idea to give Dylan Larkin a shove from behind sending him straight into Jake Allen in what looked like a spectacular collision. The Canadiens’ goalie tried to stay in the game, but had to leave shortly after, after the NHL concussion spotter requested that he undergone the concussion protocol.
Samuel Montembeault who hasn’t had much playing time this season so far was therefore called upon and like it often happens when a goaltender as to jump into the game cold, he gave a pair of bad goals to allow the Wings to tie things up and then take the lead. Dylan Larkin was the first to beat him from an impossible angle and it took less than a minutes for an unmarked Pius Suter to shoot the puck through him to make it 2-1 Wings. I won’t lie, I though they were dead and buried there, but no. Montembault shook it off and was solid from then on through the rest of the 2nd and the 3rd.
Early in the 3rd, the always hard-working Arturri Lehkonen found himself in the corner behind the Wings’ net on his knees, but he didn’t give up on the puck and fed Chris Wideman a picture-perfect pass which he sent behind Nedeljkovich in a flash. No other Canadiens would manage to beat him from then on though, he finished his evening with 35 saves and a .946 save percentage and thoroughly deserved the win.
In overtime, it was once more Dylan Larkin who was able to thread the needle from yet another impossible angle and gave the Wings their first win of the season over the Canadiens by a score of 3-2. After the game, Montreal called up Cayden Primeau who will join the team in Boston, where they will be facing the Bruins tomorrow night. It hasn’t been confirmed that Allen has a concussion yet according to Ducharme, he said it would have to be confirmed by therapists, but after seeing the impact, I’d be shocked if he wasn’t concussed.
There were a couple of positives in the game still, Ryan Poehling has done well in 2 games so far, he appears to be in a much better frame of mind then he was at camp and his playing a much better game. Chris Wideman, who’s defensive play can sometimes be hazardous, played a great game and was named 1st start of the night. As always Lehkonen’s work ethic was flawless and it served the Habs well. There will be no rest for the Canadiens as they are playing another game tomorrow, but it will be interesting to see who gets the net. Personally, I’d prefer to see Montembault in net than Primeau. Right now, the Habs are a mess and there’s no point in putting Primeau in there and risk hurting his confidence playing behind such a porous blue line and anemic attack, but we’ll see what Ducharme decides to do.
Montréal a bien commencé le match et c’est Ryan Poehling qui a marqué le premier but de la soirée, permettant aux Habs de prendre une avance de 1-0, mais, comme d’habitude, le CH a fait de son mieux pour tenter de se battre lui-même. Pour une raison inexplicable, après avoir perdu le disque en zone adverse, Jeff Petry a tenté de se racheter et a cru que c’était une bonne idée de pousser Dylan Larkin par derrière, l’expédiant directement sur Jake Allen causant une collision spectaculaire. Le gardien du CH a bien tenté de demeurer dans le match, mais il a été force de se soumettre au protocole de commotion par suite d’une decision du personnel de sécurité de la ligue.
Samuel Montembeault qui n’a pas vu beaucoup d’action cette saison a donc dû faire son entrée dans le match à froid, et comme c’est souvent le cas dans telle circonstance, il a donné 2 mauvais buts pour permettre aux Wings de prendre les devants. Dylan Larkin l’a d’abord déjoué d’un tir incroyable alors qu’il ne semblait pas y avoir d’angle pour le capitaine des Red Wings et il a fallu moins d’une minute par la suite pour que Suter lance la rondelle à travers Montembeault pour porter la marque à 2-1 Wings. Je ne mentirai pas, à ce moment-là, j’ai cru que le sort en était jetté, mais non. Montembeault s’est secoué et à retrouver son aplomb, étant solide pour le reste de la 2e et la 3e période.
Tôt en 3e période, le toujours très travaillant Arturri Lehkonen s’est retrouvé à genoux derrière le filet adverse, mais il n’a pas abandonné la rondelle et est parvenu à alimenter Wideman seul dans l’enclave d’une passe parfaite que celui-ci n’a pas perdu de temps à convertir. Aucun autre Canadien ne parviendrait à battre Nedeljkovic pour le reste de la rencontre, il a signé une performance de 35 arrêts et un pourcentage d’arrêt de .946 et méritait pleinement la victoire.
En prolongation, ce fut encore une fois Dylan Larkin qui est parvenu à enfiler l’aiguille d’un autre angle impossible pour donner la victoire aux Wings pour la première fois de la saison contre le CH par la marque de 3-2. Après le match, Montréal a rappelé Cayden Primeau qui rejoindra l’équipe à Boston, comme ils affronteront les Bruins demain soir. On n’a pas encore la confirmation qu’il souffre d’une commotion selon Dominique Ducharme mais les thérapeutes devraient se prononcer sous peu. Après avoir vu l’impact, je serais surprise qu’il s’en tire indemne.
Il y a quand même eu quelques positifs dans ce match, Ryan Poehling se tire très bien d’affaire en 2 matchs à date, il semble être dans une bien meilleure disposition qu’il ne l’était au camp d’entrainement et il joue vraiment mieux. Chris Wideman, qui a parfois certaines carences en défensive a disputé un très bon match et s’est mérité la première étoile de la rencontre.
Comme toujours, l’éthique de travail de Lehkonen a été parfait et il a une fois de plus rendu de fiers services au CH. Il n’y aura pas de repos pour le Tricolore qui affrontera les Bruins demain et il sera intéressant de voir qui sera dans le filet. Personnellement, je préférerais voir Montembeault dans le but plutôt que Primeau. Présentement, le CH est un beau foutoir et mettre Primeau dans le but derrière une défense poreuse et une attaque anémique n’est peut-être pas idéal pour sa confiance, mais on verra ce que Ducharme décidera.
