Unlike the last time the Wings came to town, there were no free wings for Habs fans tonight, but what they got was much better, a hockey game that was actually fun to watch. Straight from the puck drop, it seemed obvious that the changes were working, within 2 minutes, the Habs had scored a goal, within 4 they had 7 shots on goal and within 10 they lead 2-0. Tonight, Nick Suzuki got a goal and 2 assists, Gallagher a goal and an assist, Petry got an assist, Toffoli got two helpers and Anderson completed the score sheet with a goal.
While their names didn’t appear on the scoresheet, the players freshly recalled from Laval made quite an impact on the game. As expected, both Pezzetta and Belzile worked hard and as a result, their line was able to give some much-needed energy to the team. When your 4th line controls the play and puts the opponent on its heels, the offensive lines’ work become easier. I was also surprised to see how speedy Pezzetta can be, at one stage he really turned on the jets and I’ll admit that I was impressed. In the final frame, he was alone with 5 Wings in the offensive territory, and he manage to get the puck and pass it to a teammate who was coming on fresh off the bench.
The team effort was also much better tonight, we saw some cohesion, some neat passing and even some solid transition game, that’s right, the defense actually created some offense! It was rather refreshing to see, and I must apologize to Wideman and Niku in limited minutes, neither or them committed a turnover, the same cannot be said of Savard who had a rough night with 3 of his own. In net, Jake Allen, the winner of the Molson Cup for the month of October, got his second shutout in the Habs uniform and this time, he didn’t need to make 45 saves to get it, he received a less taxing 22 shots tonight.
Unfortunately, not everything was positive though, Jonathan Drouin only played 2 minutes and 27 seconds before he took a Brett Kulak slap shot to the head. He left the ice in a hurry, and it was later announced that he had been sent to hospital for some tests. Taking a puck to the head is rarely good news and losing Drouin right now would be a devastating blow, he’s lead the Habs in scoring since the start of the season and appears to be in such a good frame of mind. Thankfully, in his post-game comments, Josh Anderson said that Drouin was back at the Bell Centre after the game and that he appeared OK. He will be reevaluated tomorrow
Next up for the Habs, a dual with the New York Islanders on Thursday night. Once again, the Canadiens will try to win a second game in a row, something they haven’t done since their 3rd round series against the Golden Knights in the last playoffs. May the force be with them...
Contrairement à la dernière fois que les Wings sont venus en ville, les fans du CH n’ont pas eu d’ailes gratuites ce soir, mais ils ont eu quelque chose de beaucoup mieux, un match de hockey qui était agréable à regarder. Dès la mise au jeu initiale, il a semblé évident que les changements apportés fonctionnaient. Après 2 minutes, le CH menait 1-0, après 4 minutes il avait 7 tirs au but et en moins de 10 minutes, il menait 2-0. Ce soir, Nick Suzuki a récolté un but et 2 passes, Gallagher un but et une passe, Petry a eu une mention d’aide, Toffoli en a eu deux et Josh Anderson a complété la feuille de pointage avec un but.
Bien que leurs noms n’apparaissent pas sur la feuille de pointage, les joueurs fraichement rappelé de Laval ont eu un bon impact sur le match. Tel que prévu, tant Pezzetta que Belzile a travaillé fort et ils ont réussi à donner de l’énergie à l’équipe. Quand ta 4e ligne contrôle le jeu et met l’adversaire sur les talons, le travail de tes lignes offensives est facilité. J’avoue que j’ai été surprise de la vitesse dont Pezzetta a fait preuve, quand il est passé en vitesse grand v, j’ai même été impressionnée. En 3e, il était seul avec 5 joueurs des Wings en territoire adverse et il a non seulement réussi à les déposséder, mais il a également passé la rondelle à un coéquipier frais et dispos qui venait de sauter sur la glace.
L’effort d’équipe était également bien meilleur ce soir, nous avons finalement vu de la cohésion, de bons jeux de passes, et même du bon jeu de transition, eh oui! La défense a finalement généré de l’attaque! C’était rafraîchissant à voir et je dois aussi m’excuser à messieurs Wideman et Niku, dans une utilisation limitée, ils n’ont commis aucun revirement. La même chose ne peut pas être dite de David Savard cependant, puisqu’il en a 3 à sa fiche. Devant le filet, Jake Allen, le récipiendaire de la Coupe Molson pour le mois d’octobre, a signé son 2e jeu blanc dans l’uniforme du Tricolore et cette fois, il n’a pas eu à réaliser 45 arrêts pour ce faire, il n’a reçu que 22 lancers ce soir.
Hélas, tout n’a pas bien été ce soir, Jonathan Drouin n’a joué que 2 minutes 27 secondes avant d’être atteint à la tête par un lancer frappé de Brett Kulak. Il a quitté la glace à toute vitesse et le CH a plus tard annoncé qu’il avait quitté le Centre Bell en direction de l’hôpital pour subir des tests. Prendre une rondelle à la tête n’est jamais une bonne nouvelle, mais perdre Drouin présentement serait un vrai coup dur pour le CH. Il a mené l’équipe au niveau des points depuis le début de la saison et semble vraiment être dans un bon état d’esprit. Heureusement, dans ses commentaires d’après match, Josh Anderson a dit que Drouin était maintenant de retour au Centre Bell et qu’il semblait bien aller. Il sera réévalué demain.
Prochain match à l’agenda du CH, un duel contre les Islanders jeudi soir. Une fois de plus, les Canadiens tenteront de remporter un deuxième match de suite, chose qu’ils n’ont pas fait depuis leur série de 3e ronde contre les Golden Knights pendant les séries. Que la force soit avec eux...
