Penguins prospects pop into Pittsburgh

It has been a long and mostly boring summer for people who enjoy following the Penguins. After getting through the draft (both entry and expansion) and the initial free agency period it has been rather quiet. Things are slowly starting to change. The Penguins prospects are in Pittsburgh and have begun practicing over the weekend.

While it is nice to see players return to the ice the prospect camp is pretty inconsequential considering Pittsburgh has the 31st ranked prospect pool per The Athletic. It isn’t to say there aren’t players worth paying attention to, there are. It’s just that them playing against other prospects isn’t really going to give us the information we want. Players like Sam Poulin, Nate Legare, Filip Hallander, and Filip Lindberg are among the players to pay attention to. For me, I want to see them against NHL talent which they will get the chance to do at full blown training camp. For a system lacking high end prospects and depth the team really needs a few of these players to break through at some point.

Filip Hallander is looking to do just that

Young man, there is certainly a path to do it. The Penguins forward depth is very blah. We’ll see how Hallander and the other Penguins do later this week at training camp which starts on Wednesday. Sam Poulin and Nate Legare will get a lot of attention in the upcoming weeks, but the prospect I think I’m most interested in is Filip Lindberg. The former UMASS goalie had great stats in college. The Penguins didn’t upgrade their goaltending. I’m really curious to see how Lindberg acclimates himself to the professional level.

Here is the complete training camp roster

The prospects looking to get some traction will have to show themselves as capable against the NHL competition. We’ll see how they do in a few days.
