After back-to-back losses, the Jets are not ready to panic

The Jets were riding high after taking three of four from the Toronto Maple Leafs, following that up with a split against the Montreal Canadiens in Winnipeg.

The Jets were hoping to ride the momentum gained from a successful five-game run into Edmonton where they would kick off their seven-game road trip.

But after a pair of losses to the Oilers, including Saturday’s third period comeback by Edmonton, any momentum the Jets may have had has quickly disappeared.

"These two games definitely didn't go the way we wanted them to. All in all I don't think we played bad, obviously you'd like to put the puck in the net a little bit more,” said Andrew Copp.

“But I don't believe there's any panic. There's a lot of belief in our room."

Prior to their losses against the Oilers, just once this season have the Jets lost back-to-back contests. The two with the Oilers were the first time they’ve lost consecutive regulation games.

“This year, you’re not going to go 56 games without losing twice in a row,” Jets forward Andrew Copp said. “We just move on to Vancouver, and don’t let it get to three.”

Two losses is not going to destroy the Jets season by any means and it’s not going to be the reason they miss the playoffs if somehow, by some crazy force, they don’t get there.

In any hockey season a team is going to go through ups and downs, but in a 56-game season, those downs could turn ugly real quick, the Jets understand that.

"Next game has to be the hardest working game of the year, all that kind of cliché-type stuff,” said Copp. “That's real for us for the next game. I think we've just go to tap into that belief, know how good we can be and just go and outwork Vancouver and go from there."

The Jets and Oilers entered their brief two-game stint tied for second place in the North division. Even with their two losses and a now four-point cushion separating the Oilers and Jets, the Jets are still sitting pretty inside the division.

"We don’t like it,” said Blake Wheeler. “The locker room is not thrilled right now, so that’s a good sign.”

Things started off well for the Jets Saturday. Goals by Nikolaj Ehlers and Pierre-Luc Dubois 4:51 apart gave the Jets a 2-0 first period lead. Connor McDavid’s strike to end the third period cut the Jets lead to one.

After a scoreless second period, the Jets took the one-goal lead to the third period, where the Oilers scored three times en route to the 4-2 victory.

The Jets had their chances to extend their lead prior to the Oilers tying the game. An early third period power play was wasted.

"Even on the power play early in the third we had a chance to go 3-1,” said Copp. “That’s definitely a part of winning games, especially in the playoffs and down the stretch here, is learning how to put teams away.”
