Prior to the game, the social medias were full of Habs fans criticizing Dominique Ducharme for choosing to give the net to Carey Price tonight when his team absolutely needed a win, and his number 1 goaltender had been inconsistent this season. Some will say that it was only the Sens and a third string goalie, but Ottawa has been very good of late and have proven that they have to be taken seriously.
It was a good night for the special units, the Habs killed a 4-minute high stick penalty to Armia early in the game and it was perhaps a turning point. The Sens dominated the first minute of that power play but then, thanks to an equipment malfunction with Price’s pad, there was a bit of a pause and it kind of allowed Montreal to calm down and settle down.
Better yet, in the second period, when the Canadiens got their shot on the power play, it was much more efficient than it had been in a long time. A lot of passing, controlling the play and taking good shots. Gallagher scored and was hit by a stick in the process, getting the Habs a 4-minute power play. It was Jeff Petry’s turn to hit the back of the net with a powerful shot that was just inside the post.
Even though the Sens cut Montreal’s lead in half before the end of the second, it was their sole occasion to celebrate. Tyler Toffoli sealed their faith with his 13th goal of the season in an empty net. After the final whistle, Jonathan Drouin went to retrieve the puck for Dominique Ducharme who had just signed his first win as a head coach in the NHL.
Carey Price faced 27 shots tonight and only surrounded a goal and it wasn’t a bad one. Yes, he got some help from his posts, but when a shooter gets the post, it often means that the goaltender isn’t giving them anything to shoot at. There’s no doubt that this game will go a long way towards restoring Price’s ailing confidence. Just like that play on which he gave the puck straight to Brady Tkachuk and calmly make the save to fix his own mistake.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi had a great game tonight, he was making some great plays and making the right decision and creating chances. I’d be interested to see what he could do with more offensive wingers, Toffoli is working well with Suzuki and Drouin, so perhaps when Anderson returns, he could start on KK’s line…he could create a lot of space for Kotkaniemi with that big body of his.
On the blue line, I also liked Romanov’s game, he looks like the blue liner that charmed us all at the start of the season. He delivered a bone crushing hit to set the tone of the game and joined the attack on numerous occasions. Sure, there were some mistakes, but he’s learning. As for Jeff Petry, it wasn’t his best game, he committed 2 turnovers and made some questionable passes, but he still got a goal and an assist. Gallagher also had a 2-point night and lead by example all night.
The 2 points obtained tonight give the Habs a 3-point lead on Calgary in 4th place of the division with 2 games in hand. On Thursday, the CH will have a chance to make up some ground on the Jets who currently have the 3rd place in the North. This should be a very good game and hopefully, they will build up on what they accomplished tonight.
After the game, the Canadiens announced that Stephane Waite was relieved of his duties and that Sean Burke would be taking over his duties as well as being promoted as Director of goaltending. Waite had been in post since 2013 and I'll admit the move surprises me. Sean Burke will have to undergo a 14 day quarantine before joining the team as he was scouting in the USA lately. Laval's goaltending coach will be working with the Habs' netminder until Burke is cleared to join the team.

Certains diront que ce n’était que les Sénateurs et un troisième gardien, mais Ottawa a très bien fait dernièrement et a démontré que l’équipe doit être prise au sérieux.
Ce fu tune bonne soirée pour les unités spéciales, les Habs ont réussi à écouler un avantage numérique de 4 minutes tôt dans le match quand Armia a été chassé pour bâton élevé et ce fut un point tournant. Les Sens ont dominé la première minute de cette supériorité mais ensuite, grâce à un bris d’équipement de Carey Price, il y a eu une petite pause qui a permis aux montréalais de se calmer et de se refaire une contenance.
Encore mieux, dans la 2e période, les Canadiens ont eu leur tour sur le jeu de puissance et il fut beaucoup plus efficace qu’il ne l’a été depuis longtemps. Un grand nombre de passes, un contrôle du jeu et prise de bons lancés. Gallagher a marqué le premier but et s’est fait atteindre au visage par un bâton se faisant, ce qui a donné un 2e avantage, celui-là de 4 minutes au CH. Ce fut au tour de Jeff Petry de trouver la cible avec un tir puissant juste à l’intérieur du poteau.
Même si les Sénateurs ont réussi à couper l’avance de moitié avant la fin de la seconde période, ce fut leur seule occasion de célébrer. Typer Toffoli a mis fin à la rencontre en marquant son 13e but de l’année dans un filet désert. Après le coup de sifflet final, c’est Jonathan Drouin qui est allé récolter la rondelle de la première victoire dans la LNH de son entraîneur.
Carey Price a fait face à 27 tirs et n’a accordé qu’un seul but et ce ne fut pas un mauvais but. Oui, il a reçu de l’aide de ses poteaux, mais souvent, quand un joueur frappe le poteau, c’est que le gardien couvrait bien le filet. Il n’y a aucun doute que ce match l’aidera définitivement a retrouver sa confiance qui battait de l’aile présentement. Tout comme le jeu sur lequel il a remis la rondelle directement à Brady Tkachuk et a calmement fait l’arrêt afin de réparer sa propre erreur.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi a connu un très bon match ce soir, il faisait de beaux jeux, prenait les bonnes décisions et créait des opportunités. J’aimerais bien le voir avec des ailiers plus offensifs toutefois. Tyler Toffoli fonctionne bien avec Drouin et Suzuki, je serais tentée de mettre Anderson sur la ligne de KK à son retour au jeu…il pourrait créer beaucoup d’espace pour Kotkaniemi avec son jeu très robuste.
À la ligne bleue, j’ai bien aimé le match de Romanov, il a eu l’air du défenseur qui nous a tous charmé en début de saison. Il a livré toute une mise en échec pour donner le ton au match en première période et il a joint l’attaque à de nombreuses reprises. Bien sûr, il y avait des erreurs en défensive, mais c’est normal, il apprend. Quant à Jeff Petry, ce ne fut pas son meilleur match, il a commis 2 revirements et fait quelques passes douteuses, mais il a quand même fini le match avec 1 but et 1 passe, tout comme Gallagher qui a mené par l’exemple toute la soirée
Les 2 points obtenus ce soir donne au CH une avance de 3 points sur les Flames au 4e échelon de la division avec 2 matchs en main. Ce jeudi, Montréal aura la chance de couper l’avance de Winnipeg en 3e place. Ça devrait être un très bon match, et espérons-le, la troupe de Ducharme pourra bâtir sur ce qu’elle a accomplie ce soir.
Après le match, le CH a annoncé avoir congédié Séphane Waite et que Sean Burke assumerait ses fonctions tout en étant promu au rôle de Directeur des gardiens de but. Waite était en poste depuis 2013 et je l'avoue, je ne l'ai pas vu venir celle-là. Burke devra faire une quarantaine de 14 jours avant de rejoindre l'équipe comme il faisait du recrutement aux USA dernièrement. En attendant, le coach des gardiens du Rocket travaillera également avec les gardiens du CH.
