The Tampa Bay Lightning’s search for Rick Peckham’s replacement in the play-by-play booth is over. The team announced today that it has hired Dave Randorf to fill Peckham’s Hall-of-Fame-sized shoes.

Randorf joins the Lightning organization following six years with Rogers Sportsnet and Hockey Night in Canada north of the border. As someone living in Canada, I have always appreciated Randorf’s enthusiasm behind the microphone, and am thrilled that he’ll now be the voice of the Bolts. With a resume that includes 30 years of broadcasting experience, including many years at the highest level of sport, Randorf is the best possible replacement for the void left by Peckham’s departure. This is an excellent example of the Lightning organization’s commitment to ensuring that they deliver a quality product on the ice and off the ice.

With the team also announcing that it will only allow ~4,000 fans in the building for home games this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, fans will largely be left to watch from behind a television screen when the puck drops later this month. That should give us all an opportunity to get acquainted with Randorf early on as he embarks on this next professional chapter.

As Randorf gets set to take over, this announcement provides a final opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to Rick Peckham. For an amazing 25 years, he was the voice of Lightning hockey; that made him the voice of many of my personal favourite memories, and I guarantee that I’m not alone. Whether you only tuned in casually every once in a while, or sat down for every game, Rick made you feel like part of the action. His legendary calls will be remembered for a long, long time. As an example, here was his final moment in the booth for the Lightning:

Thank you, Rick. And, welcome, Dave. Let’s enjoy a great season.

As always, thanks for reading.
