TSN Mock Draft
Don’t count on it. In fact, try not to think about it (and certainly don’t bet on it). Another mock draft finds Detroit bringing Lafreniere to Motown. Craig Button did a simulated “bingo balls” edition that saw Detroit pick first, Montreal moved WAY up from 8th to number 2, New Jersey picked third and Ottawa was relegated to 4th and 5th picks.
Of course, Detroit at #1 picks Lafreniere. And, of course, if that happens, months of drooling about the reuniting of Veleno and Lafreniere and the future looks and feels bright.
At 2nd, Montreal was slated to pick Quinton Byfield, the 6’4” center
This, again, is where the draft order has shifted a bit. The predicted top picked defenseman of the draft, Jamie Drysdale, is slated going third overall with Tim Stutzle going 4th. Those two have continued to rise in the ranks in many of the mock drafts. In the world of hard reality, it seems likely that one of those two will find their way to Detroit as opposed to the (rightly) coveted Lafreniere.
Defense and goaltending. Not much is going to go right for this team with those two massive inequities. Yes, it’s tempting to go for another crack at center or a scoring winger. Until this team can successfully and frequently get out of their own zone it will be impossible to tell how much scoring talent actually exists in the fold.
Mantha showed some flashes, Zadina as well. Larkin and Bertuzzi may well be in the 20s consistently. Fabbri? It turns out there are some who don’t care for the forward and they make it well known in the comments. I do feel his upside is still significant. Fabbri was the best move made and could be a new addition to the core. My thoughts of Athanasiou “taking off” just never came to pass, even playing with McDavid.
Regardless of where Detroit picks, a good player is on the way in, and some declining players are on their way out. That, in itself, is reason to be optimistic. Here’s to some version of hockey once again!
