Do the Bruins add more to the roster on deadline day?

Trade deadline day is finally here and the Bruins are still in the mix of things, despite already trading David Backes, Axel Andersson and their 2020 first-round draft pick to the Ducks for forward Ondrej Kase.

General manager Don Sweeney finds himself in an interesting position on trade deadline day as the need for a top-six right wing is still present. Sure, Kase will get an opportunity to secure that spot, but the door is not closed on Sweeney adding a more groomed top-six right winger.

According to Ty Anderson the Bruins are still interested in Devils' forward Kyle Palmieri, as they should be.

But pulling the trigger on a deal for Palmieri may be too costly for Sweeney now that they have parted ways with their first-round pick. The Bruins do have several valuable prospects and young roster players like Karson Khulman, Danton Heinen and Anders Bjork they could package together for Palmieri.

Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to draft picks is that the Bruins do not have their first-round or fourth-round pick in 2020. Trading a second-round or third-round pick may not be something Sweeney is willing to do as that would leave the Bruins with just one draft pick in the first four rounds.

I do think Sweeney makes a trade before 3:00 PM Monday, but I wouldn't expect it to be anything major. I would expect something more along the lines of the deal he made with the Devils last season, trading a 2019 second-round pick and a 2020 fourth-round pick for Marcus Johansson.

During his tenure as Bruins general manager, Sweeney has made a handful of trade deadline moves, but his two biggest (Rick Nash in 2018 and Charlie Coyle in 2019) came in the days leading up to the actual deadline day.

Sweeney's deadline day of trades have been mostly minor trades, adding depth for a playoff run.

Sweeney deadline day trades by year:

2016:

2017 second-round pick (Mario Ferraro) and a 2016 fourth-round pick (Evan Cormier) to the Devils for Lee Stempniak.

Anthony Camara, a 2016 third-round pick (Jack Lafontaine) and a 2017 fifth-round pick (Jonathan Dugan) to the Hurricanes for John-Michael Liles.

2017:

2018 conditional sixth-round pick (Declan Chisholm) to the Jets for Drew Stafford

2018:

2019 conditional fifth-round pick (Antti Saarela) to the Blackhawks for Tommy Wingels.

2019:

2019 second-round pick (Nikita Okhotyuk) and a 2020 fourth-round pick to the Devils for Marcus Johansson.

Updates to the blog will be added as news breaks!

What would the response have been if the Bruins traded a third-round pick to Montreal for a guy they could have signed a few weeks ago?

The Buffalo Sabres have traded a 2021 fifth-round pick to the New Jersey Devils for Wayne Simmonds. Thought the Bruins had a real chance at Simmonds, and at that cost why not? Maybe Sweeney has something else up his sleeve?

12:27:

Sweeney indeed had another move up his sleeve, trading Danton Heinen to Anaheim for Nick Ritchie who is under contract through 2020-21 with a cap hit of $1,498,925. Ritchie will be a RFA in the summer of 2021.
