Quick Hits: February 5, 2020

1) After an off-day on Tuesday, the Philadelphia Flyers return to practice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. The team is expecting to have defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere (arthroscopic knee surgery) back in the lineup what they take on the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday. Carter Hart (lower right abdominal muscle strain) is also getting closer to a return, and has been on the ice regularly in recent days.

The Flyers did not much help on the NHL scoreboard on Tuesday, as the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Islanders both won their respective games in overtime, and the Florida Panthers claimed a point from their 1-0 overtime loss against the Blue Jackets. The one bit of good news was that the St. Louis Blues doubled up the Carolina Hurricanes, 6-3.

As a result, the Flyers dropped from the upper wildcard seed and a points tie with Columbus into the lower wildcard spot. On Wednesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs visit the New York Rangers. If Toronto wins, they will move into a points tie with the Flyers, although the Flyers would still be in lower wildcard position based on having played one fewer game.

2) On Tuesday, the International Ice Hockey Federation announced its IIHF Hall of Fame Class of 2020. Among the inductees are a pair of Flyers alumni defensemen: Kimmo Timonen (Finland) and Mark Streit (Switzerland).

This year's other inductees in the player category: Alexei Yashin (Russia), Ryan Smyth (Canada), and Mathias Seger (Switzerland). For the full press release, click here.

The IIHF Hall of Fame is housed within the Hockey of Fame in Toronto.

3) Flyers center Kevin Hayes is the first player on the team to score four or more shorthanded goals in a season since Matt Read notched four during the 2013-14 season. On the Flyers' official website, I broke down each of Hayes' four shorthanded goals: the game situation in which they occured, the goal sequences themselves, their impact on the game and Hayes' postgame reactions. For more, click here.

4) VIP tickets are now on sale for the 2020 Friday Night Fights fundraiser for Annalise Schultz at 2300 Arena in South Philadlephia: Click here.

5) The Flyers Warriors will take on the District Warriors at the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday evening. Game time is 7:30 p.m. ET.
