The Calgary Flames will have at least two players representing the organization at All-Star Weekend.
Today it was announced that winger Matthew Tkachuk and defenseman Mark Giordano, winner of the 2019 Norris Trophy, will suit up for the Pacific Division team. Johnny Gaudreau will need some help from voters to join his teammates in St. Louis.
Tkachuk leads the Flames with 35 points in 40 games. He’s also tied for 1st in 5v5 production – and his on-ice numbers are fairly strong – despite the fact he generally matches up against the opposition’s best players. He’s having a strong season.
While Giordano’s offensive outputs have predictably dropped off, he is still on pace to flirt with ~40 points on a team that couldn’t score for the first two months of the season.
Those aren’t eye-popping numbers but they’re solid. Giordano is still generating a ton of shots and chances as well, ranking top-15 among defenders in both categories.
I don’t think either player is having the kind of offensive season that’d make them a slam dunk selection, however, these choices do make sense.
Tkachuk is arguably having the best year of any Flames player and he’s from St. Louis so that selection checks off all the boxes.
Giordano, meanwhile, is still playing at a high level and took home real hardware last year. You want the big names there to help grow the game and Giordano has certainly developed into that.
