The Carolina Hurricanes picked up a much-needed win over the Tampa Bay Lightning yesterday. Here’s the game recap.

The Hurricanes opened the scoring on a power play about five minutes into the game, when Andrei Svechnikov took a shot from his go-to power play spot, the shot trickled through Curtis McElhinney and Sebastian Aho was there to tap the puck in behind him. Then about two and a half minutes later, Clark Bishop got the puck to Jordan Martinook in front of the net and he roofed it over McElhinney to make it 2-0.

The Hurricanes continued to pile on, increasing the lead to 3-0 when Jaccob Slavin tipped in Sebastian Aho’s shot from the point. In the second period, Tampa Bay was pressing but couldn’t find the back of the net. Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat were both denied by James Reimer on great chances, while Steven Stamkos missed high on an empty net.

Tampa Bay finally found the back of the net in the third period, when Brayden Point threw the puck in front and it went off Dougie Hamilton’s stick and between the legs of Reimer. Then a bit later, Tyler Johnson was gifted a perfect shot and he made no mistake, beating Reimer on the glove side, going off the post and in for a 3-2 game. The Lightning continued to pile on pressure as the clock ran down, with Johnson getting another great chance from right in front but Reimer made a great pad save. The Hurricanes eventually hung on for the 3-2 win, despite being outshot 38-24 in the game and 15-2 in the third period.

I wonder if there’s the possibility for Reimer to start getting into more games. Petr Mrazek has struggled recently and while Reimer is hot and cold as well, it could be worth it to run with him rather than Mrazek for a bit. Regardless, this was a huge win for the Hurricanes.

Carolina’s next game comes Tuesday against the Boston Bruins.
