Another night, another game that requires extra time! It wasn’t pretty, but the Capitals found a way to win. Here are my three takeaways:
1. Huge Mismatch – My mismatch of the night was the Capitals offense versus the shaky Bobrovsky. Bobrovsky has struggled with his GAA all season. Yes, he posted a shutout recently, but the numbers don’t lie. He is ranked 40th out of 48th eligible goaltenders with a whopping 3.50 GAA. The Capitals are tied for 1st int the league with 4.00 Goals per game. I am sure I wasn’t the only person watching the game who was thinking this could be a blowout when the Capitals scored in the first minute of the game. Other than that first goal, the Capitals came out super slow and deserved to be down 3-1 at one point. They were outplayed badly the first half of the game. Bobrovsky didn’t have his best night and consequently allowed the Capitals the chances to claw back into it. Florida mostly outplayed the Capitals so I am just happy we got a point. Thanks, Bob. As a former resident of Columbus, OH, I have seen my fair share of CBJ games and A LOT of Bob. The dude is streaky AF. I expect him to clear up this GAA up by the end of season. Playoff Bob is an entirely different conversation. Good luck with that, FLA fans (if you make it).
2. Road Warriors – With this win, the Capitals are 8-1-1 on the road to start the season for the first ten games. This is a franchise record for the first 10 road games and is by far the best road record in the league thus far. The Capitals only regulation road loss was to Nashville, a game in which they held a 2-goal third period lead. Their other loss a game against Edmonton where they also held a another 2-goal third period lead. I try not to harp too much on the past cause every team has those “coulda, shoulda, woulda” moments but still, 10-0-0 to start the season on the road would have been epic. Oh yea, the Capitals are also on a 10-game point streak. (9-0-1).
3. Tom Wilson – This guy does not get enough credit for just how well of an all-around player he has become in the league. The starting three players for OT were Carlson, Wilson, and Kuznetsov. That means the coaching staff in this instance was more comfortable with Wilson and Kuzy than Ovi and Backstorm. Ballsy. Wilson now has 7 goals and 7 assists on the season. For being labeled as a “goon”, this guy does a pretty damn good job producing offense. Everyone loves to hate on Wilson but if push came to shove, they would take him on their team in heartbeat. Anyone who says otherwise is either lying or just doesn’t know enough about Wilson's game. P.S THANK YOU HOLTBY FOR THAT PAD SAVE TO START OVERTIME.
RANDOM STAT OF THE NIGHT: John Carlson had another stellar night putting up 1G and 2A. This puts him at 429 career points which ties him for second in all time points for a Capitals Defenseman. The leading Defensive scorer all-time for Capitals is Calle Johansson with 474 points. That means Carlson is only 45 points behind him. Carlson should pass him this season. #Johnny4Norris
Next Game: Saturday vs Vegas Golden Knights – The Capitals will need a much stronger start in a game with Vegas to even think about earning a point.
