Quick Hits: September 8, 2019
1) Day 2 of the 2019 Flyers Rookie Camp featured the same lines -- and mostly the same standouts -- as the opening day on Saturday. Once again the "orange line" trio of Isaac Ratcliffe, Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee was the standout forward line, with Philippe Myers as the smoothest defenseman. No surprises on either front. The forward line combos were:
Orange: Ratcliffe - Frost - Farabee
White: Strome - Rubtsov - Laberge
Blue: Twarynski - Bunnaman - Kase
Yellow: Sushko - Vorobyev - Serdyuk
Gray: Cyr - Fitzgerald -Golod
2. Among the defensemen in the cut below Myers (who has no peers this year), second-time attendee Egor Zamula and first-time participant Mason Millman stood out among the defensemen. Zamula has been paired with Myers and has not looked out of place for this setting.
Wyatte Wylie, who is bidding for an entry-level contract and an AHL opportunity due to his late birth month status from his 2018 Draft year, is not the type of D who jumps out in the sorts of drills done on Day 1 and Day 2 but he was solid in the scrimmage that ended the day.
3. Camp invitee Ben McCartney (hip flexor, day to day) remained sidelined on Day 2.
4) Fellow invitee Mika Cyr, a QMJHL over-ager, looks like a forward who can play pro at some point in the near future. What is tougher to tell in the practice setting is whether that level right now would be ECHL or AHL. I tend to think the former, which means playing his over-ager season in junior might be his best route in the short term.
5) All three members of the Orange Line, but especially Farabee and Frost, had moments on Day 2 where they shined.
From the left dot, Frost wired home a bar-down wrister to the long side that gave Felix Sandström no shot at a save. During the scrimmage, Frost put on a burst of speed over the middle that left the D scrambling.
During a 5-on-5 drill that started from the corner, Farabee (in the defending forwars line role) intercepted the puck up high. In a game scenario, he'd have had a breakaway, with the D split and his momentum taking him the other way. Later, during the scrimmage, Farabee's forechecking work and a quick pass set up a glorious scoring chance for Ratcliffe.
6) While the rookies were scrimmaging on the Phantoms rink, the Flyers vets worked out on the primary rink. Nolan Patrick was out shooting pucks early. He made a nice little toe drag play on Samuel Morin as more players came out.
