The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Wednesday that the team has re-signed defenseman Roland McKeown to a one-year contract.

McKeown is in an interesting spot right now. He’s 23 years old and has been great in his last two seasons with Charlotte, scoring 48 points in 135 games to go along with a plus-64 rating. In 10 games with Carolina in the 2017-18 season, McKeown had three assists, was a plus-three and had a 53.3 CF% with a non-playoff Hurricanes team. Generally, McKeown looks like he’d be a great candidate for a long-term look in the NHL.

Yet with the Hurricanes’ defense corps already strong (especially on the right-side) and prospects like Jake Bean and Haydn Fleury likely ahead of him on the depth chart to start the year, McKeown may not get the chance he should.

With the one-year deal, hopefully McKeown manages to get some extended time to showcase himself in the NHL.
