Fair write up, but this team will and should miss the playoffs again. They need another top 10 pick, if not top 5.

Bertuzzi and/or Svechnikov should easily make this team out of camp.

Too many players signed to long term contracts. The rebuild will take time because this team cannot be torn down.

I feel bad for those poor optimistic bastards and all of the suffering they must have gone through since then! Ironically (from the timeframe I am figuring this is from) many posters were praising Toronto's "Youth movement" and how OTT had no good young prospects, and Ottawa had very recently drafted a guy named Erik Karlsson

Wings fan arguments five years ago:

"People have been calling us old for decades and we're still here! Holland is the best GM in sports and I have faith in him to keep the team stocked with talent."

VS:

"Uh, hey guys. I know we're still okay and all, but we're not really a top contender anymore and I don't really see how this is going any direction but down."

Wings fan arguments two years ago:

"I know they've fallen back to the pack a bit and some of their recent signings don't seem so good, but this is still a playoff team and they're trying to reload without having to tank. Tanking isn't a guarantee anyway ... just look at Edmonton!"

VS

"This team is going to be hot garbage in two years, max."

Wings fan arguments today:

"This is probably the 26th-best team in the NHL and there's no hope in sight."

VS

"26th? C'mon man. No way they're above 28th."

Unfortunately, I always liked the wings. They may have a bounce back season but even with a good season they would be fighting 5 teams for a playoff spot. I just don't see them having the goaltending and defense to get there.
They need their young core to stup up big. Larkin needs to be that 25-30 goal scorer.

Just to touch on the Sens for a bit - they have signed Oduya and Thompson - two players (like Burrows & Stalberg) have gone deep in the playoffs and/or have a stanley cup. I think signing players to 1 year deals when it makes sense is a great thing but it's really up to Chabot, Ceci, and Cleasson to push Oduya (and each other) for ice time. Ideally Karlsson would have 1 consistent partner (like methot) but I doubt that we'll see that a lot this year unless someone develops a lot of chemistry with him

Having a clueless & incompetent GM, continually making bad to worse decisions with this franchise, has done nothing but hurt them, and it shows. Mix in an AHL Head Coach at best, and you have the dumpster fire that has been around for several seasons.

Things will not get better until both of these men are gone and can do no further harm.
