He's an Over 35 contract.

IMO that rule should be for trying to get around the cap, as the wings and many other teams did, prior to the last bargaining agreement. If a player leaves to play in another league, rather than up and retiring, it should be negated. Either way, Arizona will be happy to take it on and not pay him. And we will be happy to go shopping. Loui? Steven?

Arizona received a serviceable d-man and almost 5m in LTIR relief (if they wanted it) in exchange for a top 9 forward and a draft pick. Do you think it was done strictly for cap relief?

At the time of the trade Arizona was also below cap floor. They got to move out 3.2 million in "real salary" and bring back a 5 million dollar cap hit for a "real cost" of 600K.

Detroit may be able to find a team on an internal budget to take on a big cap hit for zero real dollars.

And TBH, I'm not even sure you can trade a retired contract.

They allowed Pronger- someone working in the NHL offices to be traded. I don't see how they couldn't allow Datsyuk to be traded.

He was more "retired" than Datsyuk would be. I don't see any way the league could possibly enforce this even if the wanted to. And I doubt they want to as this is in accordance with the owners' wishes.

Pronger is on LTIR. Datsyuk would be retiring. Very different situations. I am not sure if the league would let Datsyuk's contract be traded, but the two situations aren't really comparable.

Datsyuk OTOH would be announcing his retirement in order to play in another league. It's a completely different scenario. His contract no longer exists, but his Cap hit would still be applied to Detroit.

Yes, it does. If the team and Datsyuk mutually terminate his contract, this allows Datsyuk to play in another league without penalty. The only reason his contract remains applicable in the NHL is because he signed it at/over the age of 35. See: Kovalchuk. If this scenario plays out then the Detroit Red Wings have every ability to trade his contract that carries a $7.5 million cap hit with $0 to be paid out.
