I think too many things have to go just right for the teams to make the playoffs. But I don't think things will go so wrong that we bag Conner McDonald next draft. A slight improvement year.

Matt,

Glad to see you are back writing more regularly again. It has been a very long summer. I like your take on the last two blogs. Defensively I think we are one more year away from finally rolling 3 solid lines. The Rags blogger recently posted about contract negotiations with Marc Staal. He won't resign in NY, and will be in NC by next summer. Looking for improved development from Faulk and if Sekera has a strong year again he will be extended. You would think that next fall one of either Murphy or Fleury are ready to step in (hopefully to fill the #4 spot). Push Hainsey down to #5 and it starts looking pretty deep.

Sekera or Staal / Faulk
Staal or Sekera / Murphy (maybe Fleury)
Hainsey / any of Liles (if he's still here), Harrison, Bellemore (if he is resigned) insert vet/Canes youth

I think this year Peters will give a long look at Murphy on the right side with either Sekera or Hainsey. If Murphy wins a spot we are 8 D deep to start the season. One of Gleason, Harrison, Bellemore, or Liles will be watching from the press box (assuming we carry 7 D). I think there is better balance in the lines with Murphy skating.

I think best case it looks like:

Sekera / Faulk or Murphy
Hainsey / Murphy or Faulk
Harrison or Liles / Bellemore or Gleason

I don't like Harrison and Bellemore lining up together, they both have very similar skill sets and neither are good at moving the puck. I think Bellemore is the better player between Harrison and Gleason so putting him with Liles makes sense.

If Murphy starts in Charlotte, I think it looks like:

Sekera / Faulk
Hainsey / Bellemore or Liles
Harrison / Liles, Bellemore or Gleason
