Corsi - Corsi is the number of shot attempts by a team or player. In other words, it's the sum of a team or players's goals, shots on net, shots that miss the net, and shots that are blocked. It's used as a proxy for puck possession: since we can't (yet) measure how long a player or team has possession of the puck, we use corsi as an approximation. - Colin_Dambrauskas
I see this as flawed logic.
Brett Hull never, ever had puck possession. But he took a heckuva lot of shots. |

How can Fenwick be worse at smaller sample sizes and better at larger ones? And how can we even know that if we aren't directly measuring possession somehow? |

I hope the idea with Dubas is that he will not be using statistics that are readily available, not in the long-term anyways.
I take it he will have a state of the art data collection and maintenance department set-up at the ACC that will be not only gathering and using their own proprietary data but cleansing it for the flaws. |

Read today's Toronto Sun - an article in it pretty much confirms he'll be doing what you are hoping for.
At the end of the day, you have to go with your gut.
It appears that he uses these things to make a more informed decision, but at the end of the day still goes with his gut. |

Please don't make me the the Sun's Leafs coverage.
I assume it'll be like Chicago, no analytical approach told Bowman to pay Kane and Toews +$20M/year. At some point you step away from the spreadsheets and do the right thing.

Fancy stats schmancy stats... someone drop the gloves already |

I don't like "fancy" stats but I understand some of the advanced stats need to be considered when making a team. |

The Leaf dressing room was hit by a wrecking ball and couldn't be put back together again.
Yeah, that was weak, so is her music, so a match. |

Well, as I made mention in the blog, the system put in place can influence these individual stats. So it will be on the Leafs management to also make necessary changes. But by bringing in a guy like Dubas who can bestow some of his knowledge upon the coaches, in addition to (having) new coaches...it couldnt get any worse, right? |

I don't think that just posting those numbers side by side is a true comparison. I believe there is a way to quantify their corsi/fenwick against their team as a whole to show their contribution to the team. Gunner played higher in the lineup against much tougher competition on a historically bad corsi team and polak played lower on a very good corsi team.
I'm sure without a doubt that gunner will play higher in the the blues lineup than polak did, and will have better corsi numbers than polak. |
