Franklin Steele: Setting Realistic Expectations for Tomas Hertl Tomas Hertl was outstanding as a rookie, but expectations for him should be realistic heading into 2014-15.

Say what you guys want but the right rookie won the Calder. Hertl is good but not a better player than Mackinnon. Just wait 3 or 4 year from now when San Jose is still Stanley Cupless.

Yeah, because the Calder & the Stanley Cup are directly correlated...

If the calder trophy was awarded in the first couple months of the season then yes he would have won it

BUT

I am 100% sure MacKinnon would have passed him later on in the season not a dig at Hertl but MacKinnon has got generational player written all over him

I like Hertl but I'd like to see what he can do without Jumbo Joe centering him. Thornton makes his team mates better. He did with Cheechoo and Setoguchi. I'd like to see him with Couture or Pavelski and he how he keeps up the strong play or if it dips a bit.

True but I am excited to see what Hertl can do if he can stay uninjured for a full season.

Right now I would say he's slotted to play with Thornton and Pavelski so that should give him two strong guys to lean on. He's still very much untested and raw so his numbers could be all over the place.

even the announcers (true homers to the end) said it wasn't dirty. grow up. if he wanted to shred his knee, brown wouldn't have picked up his leg, he'd have leaned into him.

unfortunate, the kid is talented. calder was certainly within reach over a full season. looking forward to seeing him play this year.

Use what he learned last year and focus that rage to lead the Sharks. This kid is dangerous.

So you would deny a trade Mackinnon for Hertl straight up?
