Ekblad, Bennett, Reinhart and Draistal will all be off the board imo. Dal Cole/Virtanen etc. would be the guy you're letting go.

Don't see that changing even if, as rumoured, Edmonton trades the 3rd.

He's quick as can be. Faster than MacKinnon probably. Like a decidedly better Grabner

Dalcolle wrapped up perfectly for the Islanders, great fit for Tavares as well.

The Isles would be stupid to give up this pick. Ekblad, Reinhart, Bennett, Dal Colle and Draisatl all project to have star potential. This debate is ridiculous. The odds of winding up in the top 5 next year are very slim. Everything went wrong this year and we still weren't anywhere near as bad as you need to be to get a top two pick. Dee. You're just brutal. You have no common sense. I'm sick of reading your nonsense

The Top 5 every year almost always "project to have star potential." There have also been plenty of Top 5 disappoints as well. Unless the the Islanders trade up, they can pretty much forget about Ekblad, Reinhart and Bennett, leaving Dal Colle and Draisatl in the projected Top 5. That said, after the Top 3 there's a bit of a drop off and probably 5 or 6 players that are right there with Dal Colle and Draisatl. If NYI was going to keep their 2014 1st, they might be smart to trade down 3 or 4 spots to maximize their 2014 draft.

Furthermore, there is a reason teams aren't trading their 2015 1st, McDavid. Now wouldn't Islanders fans be PISSED if their 2015 was used by the Sabres to draft McDavid.

From a risk/reward perspective, keeping the 2015 1st is the better play. It should also be noted that 2015 1st's carry MUCH HIGHER value than the 2014.

Exactly, a top 15/20 pick next year is worth a ton more then a #5 this year. This pick should goto Buffalo.

The isles had a very unfortunate season, I agree with the guy who said they had a lot go wrong and are a better team, by how much I don't know. The thing is though to me if the management don't keep this pick it sends a message. That message is that they have no faith in their team to succeed next year and are basically telling their players to pack it in before they even get to training camp. That tells your team that they think they will lose more than win and although I have always doubted any existing rumors of Tavares wanting out. I think that would almost be a good enough reason for me to when my contract is up. There is a lot of upside to keeping the pick in 2014. They pick a guy in the top 5, and more than that the coaches and everyone will be trying harder to win. It would almost remind me of what happened when Colorado traded for varlamov after selecting #2 overall. Keeping the pick sends the message that they are more the team that made the playoffs and almost eliminated the pens rather than the one that hasn't been able to escape the bottom 5 since drafting taveres.

Also to the people who thinks it's the top 3 then everyone in rear view I disagree. I believe the top ten consists of three tiers of talent. 1st being ekblad, Reinhardt, Bennett, then driestl and dal colle then the rest. And if ekblad is gone and the oil keep the pick I could easily see them taking driestl to make their top 6 and centr position bigger

Agreed, this was a ridiculous article. I'm not even an Isles fan (although I always cheered for Mike Bossy as a wee tike)....

Of course the Isles keep the pick and grab a legit player. The Isles could finish in the playoffs easily if they keep their core intact and add a legit goalchie.... why they didn't offer up something better than what NJ did for Schneider I'll never know.... mind boggling. should have offered the Canucks two first rounders and it would have been a done deal versus the 9 pick from NJ.

just an outsiders opinion, i'd give up the pick this year. losing a top 5 would suck, but lets be honest, imagine at this point next year you all are sitting here with your team having the #1 pick only to have to give it to buffalo. a franchise player gone because of vanek.

you just need to ask yourself, will this team be any better next season? and to me, right now looking at you guys, I don't think that answer is yes necessarily. the only problem is that you will probably be competing with a lot of teams for bottom of the barrel next season. any team that gets off to a bad start wont be in a rush to get better if they can help it.

i'd give it up, cut your loses and move on to next year. the risk just isn't worth it.

Garth is keeping the pick and he would be a fool not to keep it. What message are you sending to your fan base the year before the big move to brooklyn? We plan to suck our last year in NVMC where we won 4 stanley cups?

I'd take the top 5 pick this year over a 15-20 pick next year. Talent level will be similar for those picks. I know next years draft has some potential studs in it but I refuse to believe their will be 15-20 players that are definitely better then Dal Colle and Draisatl.

With all the injuries and awful goaltending this season, the team isn't in bad shape going into 2014 and if they are able to grab a decent starting goalie which looks very doable, they will NOT be in contention for McDavid. With all the rookies stepping up this year, it's going to be exciting to see what they can do with a healthy roster, another year of development for the rooks and JT leading the charge.

Boring NHL Lottery Show this year.

Am I the only one who's tired of the 5th round pick. Sure fans on here say the right thing like "ohhhh the isles are a better team than what they showed this year", but, are they?? Sports are a dont tell me, show me business. The isles organization have showed the same thing under Garth's tenure.....they can't win at home, can't hold a lead, and after the trade deadline when they're out of playoff contention they start to turn it on......when they should say phuck it, and try and get the better pick.

I'm sure it's been discussed on here the last few days, but how can the isles bring back jack capuano?? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. If anyone can seriously answer this, I'm literally dumbfounded. This is twilight zone sh1t

I have a question for Islander fans. I am a Sabres fan and would like to know if you think the Sabres owning the Islanders 2nd round pick in 2015 comes into play? the 2015 draft is stronger than the 2014 draft and I'd be curious to know to if you'd mind the NYI not having a pick, unless a trade happens, until the 3rd round. thanks.

But they do not have there own 2nd rounder next year. They traded there 2015 2nd rounder to buffalo. The flyers will certainly be way higher in the standings then the islanders next season. Imagine islanders defer to next year win the lottery and buffalo gets the pick for round 1 and there pick for round 2. Boom goes the dynamite.

I'd rather take that risk then defer a top 5 pick and end up with the 15-20th pick in 2015. Call me crazy but I seriously believe the Islanders will not be in lottery contention next year as long as the goal tending situation is fixed.

you've been reading into the media way too much sir. this is an average draft class, which means theres still a ton of value here. you're just listening to the hype of the mcdavid class.

keep the 2014 pick with expectations of improving next year. but, go out and spend money. get a legitimate goalie and a defenseman. cant just keep the exact same team and expect better results.
