You touched on it, but my biggest problem with the "hit" stat is it is far too subjective, building to building.

I agree with your take on the stat, relative to "new" stats versus "old" stats. It depends upon context, as always.

That said, because the stat is so subjective, I don't take it all that seriously.

Schenn has been better as a center than as a winger in his NHL career. Count me among those who would like to see him stay at in the middle for the long haul.

This can't be.... MJL told me otherwise

As always - Nice write up Bill. Thank you.

Nice blog Bill, as always. Just one more day until the Flyers get back into action.

Regarding the stat about Schenn scoring less in losses than in wins, is the decline much more than the team-wide decline in scoring the is usually seen when losing? Not to pile more work onto you, but do you know if there's a player with opposite stats? My guess would be Simmonds but im only guessing.

I think centre is where he is best slotted however, the talk yesterday about Vinny tells me that he also should be at centre. It's created a log jam and it's not like they can dump Vinny other than find a trade partner which is unlikely. I really want Vinny to succeed here, but I think he also needs to play centre to do so.

The solution is staring us all in the face... Move Vinny to RD!

I think Lecavalier can successfully acclimate to the Wing. What needs to be done is figure out where they want Schenn and leave him there. In my opinion Schenn can play either spot equally well. Schenn was leading the team in scoring a good portion of the early Season while playing on the Wing. Schenn has equal success as well as equal dry spells at either spot. But put him in one spot, and leave him there.

Bill,

I was looking for young defensemen for the Flyers to possibly trade for. Edler from Vancouver would make sense. If the Flyers offered B. Schenn do you think that would get it done? Would you make a trade that involved B. Schenn for Edler?

I think the Flyers would need to add something else. Schenn is an RFA so the Canucks control his rights. Edler is signed to an appropriate contract for the next 4 years. I imagine it would take at least an additional 1st round pick for the Flyers to get it done.

I like Edler a lot. I'd like to see the Flyers acquire him if the price is right. I don't think I'd be willing to add the first round pick though.

It's a team-wide effect; however, what was notable to me that his splits are a bit beyond the norm.

Simmonds' splits:

In wins: 30 GP, 9 G (4 PPG), 15 A, 24 PTS, 29 PIM, +9
In losses: 29 GP, 9 G (5 PPG), 9 A, 18 PTS, 56 PIM, -11

I would think about a deal for Edler but would not do B. Schenn plus a 1st round pick.

B Schenn is well on his way to cementing his status as the #2 center here for a long time. He needs to work on being more consistent, but that should come with age. Don't believe me? Look at kesler and backes stats when they were 22. Schenn is on his way.

agreed, though B. Schenn plus a 3rd I would have to think about though I don't know if that would be enough for the Canucks

I agree. I've ALWAYS liked Schenn more at center. He just looks more comfortable there. He's been saddled with Vinny and Briere on his wing because neither of those guys are good enough to play top line and both struggle too much on defense to play on the 3rd line.

We saw what Schenn could do with Hartnell and Simmonds as his wings. If they get him 2 natural wingers to play with, he will be a very good #2C. I truly believe that.

Well at least Simmonds score goals as much when losing as winning, but his teammates scores less, hence the fewer assists. Simmonds sure doesnt like losing (more pims when losing)

everything costs so much right now. its legitimately ridiculous. along with FA prices, deadline deals are egregious anymore.

I would be ecstatic if that happened personally. If the Olympics showed me anything it's that Weber or Doughty is what we need, but I don't think we can get either..

i would set the price at both of them at just below unfathomable.
