He won't be worth an 8 year deal at 7M per season but that's all the Leafs got... He's a #2 D man playing a #1 role... If the Leafs lose him then they have no legitimate #1 and no #2.
They will overpay for him and regret it in a couple seasons. |

Depends who they get on the blue line to replace him.
Without him the D is in complete shambles... even more than now |

Nucks can just wait till July 1st if they really want him.
They're too thin to trade for Dion. |

Sadly, I completely agree on most counts. Unless they can pull off a monster trade bringing in a legit top d-man, Dion stays and gets overpaid. |

The Islanders should do whatever it takes, overpay if necessary, for him |

Without Dion they have the oilers defence, but he may have priced himself out of town |

The reason that there isn't much chatter about Phaneuf is that every GM in the league knows that he's overpaid at his current salary. The Leafs would be insane to give him 7+ long term. Nonis hasn't made a good move since he took over for Burke. This playoff caliber team is Burke's creation and Nonis is doing what he can to unravel it, so I wouldn't be surprised if he gives Phaneuf 8 years, 56 million. |

Move him if it's part of a package to land a defensive specialist who can lead the backend and calm them down.
No clue who that would be. |

It's hard to nail down what he is worth. Statistically he is a top 6 d-man since he entered the league. But what happens on paper doesn't always translate to what happens on the ice. He makes suspect decisions, but this year he's been playing some of his best hockey. Personally, I would hate to see him go. 8 years a t 7 per is a lot though...Especially years 6, 7, and 8....maybe even 5. |

Well it's a question of whether they want to push to be a consistent playoff team or picking out their seats for the McDavid lottery.
As much flack as Phaneuf gets his defensive game is good when he's not run into the ground. Some guys can play 30 minutes without a problem, he just can't. But with reasonable minutes he can play well. 7 million is a bit more than he should get, but it's not as much of an overpayment as some might make it out to be.
There really is no choice. Get him signed or be prepared to tank it to the bottom of the league next year. Nonis has to pick one. |

Nobody has "oilers defence". Well if you include AHL teams you might find a couple... |
