I'm not too sure about this decision. I get why they did it though; he is a leader, veteran, stanley cup champion and is committed to fitness but he hasn't even played a game for the Oilers yet. Gretzky didn't even get that kind of treatment when he went to the LA Kings.

How can you say Gretzky was never a leader in this league? He not only lead by example on the ice but was also a model citizen off the ice. He contributed to the community on many different levels, whether it was by donating money, time or both. Let me guess, Steve Yzerman and Joe Sakic weren't leaders in this league either?

As a Bruins fan, I think this is a great choice for the young Oilers. AF probably won't be around after his current deal and is the kind of guy who would pass the captaincy on even if he is still playing and it's best for the team.

Also, Bruins named Chara captain not long after they signed him as a free agent based on his ability to lead by example, his work ethic, desire to keep pressure off a young Bergeron. Ference has similar qualities and will do the same for Edmonton even if he isn't a star.
