Dallas Eakins and the Edmonton Oilers have named newcomer Andrew Ference the 14th Captain in Oiler history.

The Oil signed Ference, the 34 year old Edmonton native, in large part because of his experience and reputation as a leader. Since coming back home to Edmonton he has been especially active in the community and in short order has displayed the qualities of leadership and professionalism that the Oilers have been looking for from whoever would come in to be the next Captain of the team.

This of course bypasses all of the incumbent Oilers who many felt would be the logical choice to be Captain. Other names that may have been in the mix were Hall, Eberle, Gagner, or even Ryan Smyth. Ference is young enough that he is not really a stop-gap option as the Captain but he is not young enough to think that he will prevent one of the kids from taking the Captaincy within a few years.

Almost since he was signed Ference was given Dark-Horse status for the Captain's role, now all that talk has come to fruition.
