It's 5, 5.5, 6.5, 7, 7, 7, 7.5.

Haven't seen anything on the NTC/NMC; but Armstrong seldom gives them out, and I don't think you can have one till UFA years anyways, so definitely none in the first 4 years of the contract.

that's pretty much the going rate for an elite D man so blues fans should be very happy with this.

Good deal for both sides. Alex could have received more, but little leverage as an RFA.

Probably a million per year too high, but I'm guessing they're both happy with the deal.

It activates on his 27th birthday. Part of the CBA, can't have a NTC until you are eligible to be a UFA.

It's not honestly, already a number one d man and most agree could easily be regarded as an elite one. 6.5 is more then reasonable, 5.5 would be extremely cheap.

I don't see it that way, is he a very good young player, yes absolutely! In his three years in the league he's averaging around 50 points, last year being pro-rated of course. He's a number one PP quarterback, he's a great skater, he makes good decisions with the puck, he uses body position well although he's not physical, etc etc...all of the above.

But...when you look at the other 50 point players around about his skill level, the numbers really vary. Last season he had 24 points, so did Francois Beauchemin, Dan Hamhuis & Oliver Ekman-Larsson, all good players but nowhere near $6.5 million guys. And yes I know he's more offensively gifted than those players, but each is good in their own right at what they do.

The difference between the guys that you mentioned (excepting Ekman-Larsson) is that they are old. Petro still hasn't hit his talent ceiling. If you compare Petro's game right now to where Lidstrom was after three seasons in the NHL, the comparison is really uncanny. Lidstrom averaged 52 pts in his first three years. He wasn't particularly physical, but he was always in the right place at the right time. Additionally, he made smart decisions with the puck and even created big plays with stretch passes, etc.

Petro is on a similar learning curve.

Good luck to you guys this year. It's going to be interesting to see how the year goes with Torts up there...

It should be a fun year, the players seem really fired up about the changes. Western Conference should be a good one this year. Blues have a good young team, if they had a #1 center they'd be dangerous...or rather more dangerous than they already are!

Get ready for Tortorella to play the Sedins for 32min a night & then throw them rip them in the media for not being able to perform in the 3rd period. That guy is a joke of a coach. Super emotional, total idiot with the media, and as arrogant as they get. SOOOO glad he's not in NYC anymore. I give him 1.5 seasons before he gets the axe. Canucks could have done better.
