John Toperzer: Wednesday Penguins Chatter No more news about a Shane Doan contract, now what?

Answers to the questions:

1) I am not Simon Despres
2) Malkin - more points
3) Neither should be on the penalty kill. Of the two, Crosby would be better, but the Pens have enough annoying pests on the penalty kill that can fill that role fine.

Nope. He signed with the Rangers. Now Asham and Rupp are united. We do still have Engelland though.

Dear Sidney,

It is pretty simple...When you don't play good solid team defense in the playoffs....YOU LOSE!!!...every single time!

Best PK in the NHL for like 75 games last season...then it falls apart the last two weeks, & was even worse in the playoffs.

I'm a C-leaguer in a beer league in Raleigh...& I could have scored a PP goal against the Pens in the playoffs!

Amen. I would argue they had the best PK for two and a half seasons before it went bad. Change of rosters and all that entails, but they still dominated on the PK, but couldn't get it together for the playoffs. Also, the defensive pairing changes hurt them and so did putting 5 forwards on the PP. They need 2 defensemen out there, they scored fine on the PP before Crosby came back. They just hurt the team on PP/PK by forcing it too much.

I don't think the Pens PK slipped much from the regular season, I just think they were outmatched from a talent perspective and thus were playing a far superior team.

Well thank God the Pens didn't have to play a team that advanced past the second round.

It did. They had continuity until Crosby came back and they complicated it by taking a defenseman off and putting Crosby in. There was no defensive responsibilty---hence shorthanded goals.

You didn't watch any Pens games heading towards the play-offs then if you buy that. It started to slip badly before. If they had the same PK as it did in the first 75 games, the Pens win the series. It's just that simple.

The downward spiral started on March 24th with the 8-4 loss to Ottawa and continued in the next few games against the Islanders when the Pens had a legit shot at overtaking the Rags for 1st in the conference.

I think the Paul Martin MAF collision was a major event within that.

It would be interesting to find out whether the Malkin-Crosby playoff collision actually did any damage to Sid. That was a major bash.

Fortunately, Sid appears to be 100 percent now.

Forgot about that during the couple games with the Isles after the Ottawa loss. Certainly didnt help things for either of them.

Much like Ryan Miller I think MAF had some cobwebs to shake out after their big collisions. Unfortunately for MAF the playoffs came too soon for him to get that appropriate amount of time.

Im excited to see vokoun take some legit time. Im hoping the pens goalies can do something like the Blues had going on. Also, does anyone think the pens should of jumped on the rozsival deal??

I forgot to add this from NHL 13. I traded paul martin for chicago's 2013 and 2014 1st round picks hahaha

Don't listen to daman he's even a troll on the flyers board. The reason the flyers beat the pens in the playoffs is easy, they have no leadership anymore. Crosby is not a good captain. He may be a marquee attraction but he seriously lacks what it takes to lead a team. If he did his quotes after game three would've been "we lost our cool and we beat ourselves.", not "I don't like them."

A lot of older players said and did worse than the players do now. The players of yesteryear must thank their lucky stars they played before the 24 hour news cycle and social media came about.

Thats a good point that you make, but being the time we live in and he knows how the media works i can't give him a pass on it. I can't deny his skill but to me he hasn't shown the leadership that's been written about.
