Because you don't get a young defenseman for Gilbert.
- deadpoulet

I think you could.

All you do is waste your time in the Edmonton thread.

We don't really care about your input haha. But feel free to share it I guess.

This is a very good move for the Oilers. Schultz is exactly the type of player they needed.

I would have rather traded Whitney, whose barely top four.
- Jack-artist

Buddy are you mental!!
Whitney is by far the teams best defensemen. Smid is barely top 4. Whitney would be a top pairing Defenseman on every team except Nashville (Obviously with Weber and Suter) and has a bargain cap hit. give your head a shake

Pure lateral move.

Offensive D-man for Defensive D-man.

Schultz reliable, effective, and hasn't missed many games. I like it.

Plus it sounds like the Minny dressing room is heartbroken. That's the kind of guy you want to add.

- Bucky4Life

From what I can gather, he's got a Jason Smith feel to him.

Agreed. I would have given up some package of Omark, Jones, Teubert, Peckham, etc. gladly. A somewhat lateral move seems odd at this time in the rebuild.
- Morris

Problem is if that was available ST would've done that. Teams want good players for good players.

If they wanted prospects/picks a contender would've gotten Schultz. Same goes for gilbert.

Solid trade. I think in the long run, this is better for our team.

I waste my time elsewhere as well.

I am sure your gm tried to get a better deal but sometimes, the deal is not there.

All the fans always wants more and they overvalue their players.

Habs fans wanted more for AK 46, but the value was not there.

Give my head a shake? Have you watched Whitney play this year? He can barely skate anymore. He's lucky if he's still in the league in three years time.

Exactly what I was thinking. Petry will take over Gibby's role. Plus he's not as soft as Gibby. Schultz will take some of the load off of Smid. Win-Win for both teams. I just hate that its a trade within the division.

Fans on twitter are extrenely angry.

Don't get it.

I like the deal, we need to be better "defensively". To me, Gilbert was good, but not as good as Schultz.

- jeremyn

Agree, this makes the Oilers better, people need to realize that Jeff Petry made Gilbert expendable,Fans here asking for younger player for Gilbert in a trade, well the trade did happen and is Nick Schultz + Jeff Petry(Gilbert Ice Time).

True enough. It just sucks to make a move from a position of organizational weakness. Although it seems like a fair number of our d prospects are PMDs so hopefully it works out in the end.

I like the trade. Shultz is a decent skater and is way better in the defensive zone that Gilbert.

Pretty easy. The Oilers have a hodgepodge of D, some are better offensively than others but there is no guy who takes charge, there is no guy who is an anchor. You now have a leader, a likable guy who everyone from the coaching staff to the younger players that make up the roster can look to and know that when he is on the ice, everything will be okay. FInal minute? He's the guy. Gilbert is not that guy, he's more of a risk taker. Schultz gives balance. Barker, Peckham, Petry, Whitney? Come on. Schultz is the anchor and you're tema is lucky to have snagged him.

He was 5th on Minnesota in ice time. This contradicts your statement.

Also considering that Minny might have a worse defense than us.

He got moved in Minny because he fell out of favor with Yeo. If he was 37 year olds, then I'd see your point, but he's entering his prime and was not played to his full potential. Give it time. If I'm wrong, i'll admit it, but I think this is a great move for Edmonton.

EDIT: by fell out of favor, I just mean he wasn't used to his strengths as much as he should have been. I had hoped Ottawa would trade for him

Ok man Lets see how you skate when every stride causes you pain. Now healthy and looks much better. You need to watch the game if you want to make ridiculous comments like that

In the summer, the copper and blue's Derek Zona speculated Schultz could be had for Smid and a 3rd.

Did we overpay?

Hey you called me out and made a concrete, hyperbolic statement that not too many would agree with at this point.
